Cock, Click but no Bang (?)

I'm posting this here because it happened w/ my Redux yesterday, but I beleive this could happen on any Nelson-based valve system. For the life of me I can't figure out what exactly happened.

The gun was shooting around 280+/-5fps on 12ies, pretty consistently for the first game of the day. I had a barrel break, but no breech chops, so after the game I took it off the field and I pulled the slide and barrel off and cleaned her up.

I got out onto the field for the 2nd game and she shot the first 6 or 7 shot (new 12ie) at velocity and then each shot after that began to drop off to the point the balls were basically rolling out of the barrel. I thought at first I got a bad 12 gram, so I swapped out, got two or three good shots off that 12 gram and it started to drop off again. I swapped a 3rd 12 gram in and it did the same thing - 2 or 3 good shots, then a couple lobbing, followed by cocking and firing but the valve was not opening at all (ie: hammer catches & fires but no bang).

I don't mess w/ my gear at the field, so I put her away for the day and played w/ my T2 the remainder of the day. I decided I'd try to figure out what happened today.

I had two thoughts:

1) the nylon grub screw had come loose to the point that the TPC had screwed itself completely out (but even if this had happened I still should've been seeing shots around 200+/-fps
-or- 2) very unlikely possibility that the PT or Pierce assy. were blocked by something ()

Anyways, I broke her down, and nothing appears to be wrong with her. Nylon grub screw is still well seated and TPC hasn't moved (I think I have an oring modified TPC in this bolt as well), and the PT, valve and pierce pin assembly are all clean and free of debris. Also the cup appears to be properly seated and I can't see anything wrong w/ the PT. I reassembled and aired her up on the remote adaptor to compressed air and just dry fired her 20 times w/ no issues... now I'm really confused.

Any one have any thoughts about what happened?

Just out of curiosity, what brand of 12ies were you using? I've had streaks of duds like that with crossmans in the past. Rarely, but it has happened. When you dropped the 12ies out, was there a lot left in them that came out as you were unscrewing the knob? Or were they dead?

Sounds like ice in the piercing pin or even power tube can cause the valve not to fully recharge or shoot low velocity .Not very common .Usually happens under autotriggering. You may also have a peircing pin that is getting dull and not opening the the 12 gram hole big enough.

Oop, saw you already checked the pierce pin, just sounds odd since my phantom did this exact same thing, turned out to be the pierce pin had a small cap of metal over the tip from one of the 12ies.

I forgot that part. I was using lelands and they were venting as if completely full when dumped.

I'm thinking that this might have been what happened - Either the pierce pin assembly froze over, it wasn't opening the 12ies completely due to being dull or possibly was temporarily blocked by something. I'll take a closer look at it again to see if it appears to be getting dull. Thanks guys.

I did check this as well and it appears to be fine - I'm using an older Hammer PT that has two large inlet ports.

I experienced something similar in my Phantom (about 5 shots and then barely out of the barrel then vent). Turned out I had a microscopic leak out of my bobbed valve body. Have you sprayed it with water/submerged it while its gassed up to see if any bubbles formed?

Sorry I don't have a more technical answer..

I agree with artguy. Charge it with a new 12gram and submerg it underwater. Watch for any bubbles. How long is it between shots where you notice the drop off?

I was snap shooting from a bunker, so 2-3 sec between shots... 1st shot - playable velocity, 2-3sec later 2nd shot - slightly low (250ish fps), 2-3sec later 3rd shot - ball lobs out of barrel (150ish fps), 2-3sec later 4th shot - cock, click but no bang...

Add: again, the strangest thing is, it is not doing it any more, but I've only checked it on the remote line to compressed air (thanks again for the CA adaptor sniper), so maybe I should put a 12ie thru her to see what happens...
