Redux Duck questions

EDIT: Redux R043 arrived today! What a beaut'.

A parts kit and velocity adjustment tool were included with the Redux but no manual.

Is there an online manual available?

EDIT: I see a Redux Knowledge Base thread.

Tell me something I haven't read about the Desert Duck "Redux."
  • How consistent is it, shot to shot? (and by extension, how accurate, assuming good quality paint)
  • How loud is it?
  • Is it worth $1,000? (clearly it's worth that to somebody because that's what going rate is)

I was thinking about buying one but if it isn't a shooter, it'll just annoy me. It's gotta be deadly accurate. Silent would be nice.

Pretty sure you're paying $1000 for the art more than the functionality. A good example is many players prefer their phantom over their carter, price not being a factor.

Actually, it is a highly functional marker.
reviews are available just search. This one has a consistency breakdown in it.

I have yet to find a review where the Redux is shot over a chrono with tournament-grade (X-Ball/DXS Gold, Hellfire) paint sorted by size.

I'd like to know if the Redux shoots +/-0, +/-1, +/-5, +/-10...?.
I know that's not the only measure of a marker's accuracy but it gives an idea of the consistency of the internals.

right out of the box my Redux needed a little spring tuning to get the gas efficiency up to a tolerable amount. the chrono readings were pretty consistent but like all Nelson based guns there is a 'break in' period required for best consistency.

i think the price is worth it and if you don't like it, it should be easy to sell.

Yea...I never updated my comparison with efficiency numbers, as I sold my Duckslide (it's just a regular dropout phantom at it's heart though, so you can pull efficiency numbers from any phantom set up the same way, and my Carter Duck's slam changer pin broke, so I haven't been able to do any more testing for now).

How consistent is it from shot to shot?

It's consistent enough for me, I don't get shots that have huge flight differences. I always underbore a lot though, which also helps with my efficiency. If you're really looking for great consistency, get a freak kit, and BUY HIGH QUALITY PAINT. I cannot stress this enough, if you use white box or walmart paint, your consistency will suffer, no matter what gun/barrel/accuracy gimmick you use (alien indepence, hammerhead barrel, backspin bolt anyone?).

The Redux needs a break in period, the previous owner of mine said he was only getting 10-15 shots/12 gram for the first 1-200 shots, but now I get 25-30 shots using the same spring combo, red valve and I think green or blue Main (lol I'm not even sure). I haven't really played with the spring combos, that was one of my projects that had to be shelved due to neighbors living too close and not having a backyard to shoot in.

How loud is it?
It's actually a lot quieter than I thought even though it has a 6 inch unported barrel. It uses a Phantom bolt and hammer, and a Lapco power tube that has about 1cm cut off the front (the part that is enlarged for those of you that know what lapco power tubes look like) and the bore enlarged by mOngo.
Watch this video of DSA shooting it...it's quiet!
YouTube - Redux Stock Class Action

Is it worth 1000$?
Reason's to get one:
1. It has a freak bored barrel. That should be enough reason to get one!
2. mOngo will take care of you no matter what!
3. Classic tribute to a classic gun.
4. You will get looks and questions in the field.
5. You can actually use sights to aim!!!
6. It's very ergonomic, despite it looking like a pistol, it feels more like a full sized pump gun.
7. Resale value is very good, I think the last three that sold all went for 900$, 900$, and 1000$, this was since the beginning of 2009. mOngo has his personal one listed at 1300$ in the B/S/T, it is dual tone though, and looks wicked.
8. Disassembly is a breeze
9. Adjustable trigger slack!

Reason's not to get one:
1. 1k is no laughing matter
2. getting used to the pump stroke can take a little time to get used to.
3. If you don't like playing stock class at all...you may end up like some members who buy and then sell within a period of a few weeks. I know I have been guilty of this lol. Some stock class guns just don't work for me (i.e. those without stocks, except for the redux).
4. The trigger pull on mine was very difficult, as my sear tripper was a shortened metal rod versus the one that DSA has, which is integrated into the trigger and is a slope. mOngo changed his internals sometime inbetween DSA's redux and mine, he went from custom making them to using a phantom hammer and bolt and the custom powertube. A positive though is that my sear tripper is made out of steel, and won't wear out anytime soon lol. Also, the pull has lightened up to the point where it's not an issue anymore.

Anyways, I hope this helps, and I'm sure DSA and mOngo, and other redux owners will be in here shortly to chime in.

I've never sorted my paint by size...do you do that before playing? Also, if you underbore..you never have to worry about sorting your paint . I do what bryce does and always use a .682 freak bore on all my paint (if I had a .680 I would use that) regardless of it's initial size. I literally have never gotten a barrel break since getting my redux a few months ago.

Here is another of DSA's videos, testing the Redux over the chrono:

Let's be honest if your asking the question about value it may not be the gun for you. The fact is the Redux is a specialty gun which is made by hand make it worth every penny. Paint to bore is not an issue due to the fact it can be perfectly sized with the freak inserts. Not that I am a great player bit you have to be honest and ask yourself can you handle one in the pipe vs open class players.

I play against electros, and half of them give me the "wtf is that thing, are you seriously going to play with that" and the other half are the kids with ions and the like who are kinda intimidated by it. It is a rush like no other when balls are flying to your right and left, you only have balls in the tube, and you peek out, line up a shot as fast and accurately as you can, and duck back in. That's another cool thing, your profile is almost non existent when sticking out of the bunker.
