Thumbs up Back Bottle (BBA) valve on Redux - success

Executive Summary
Original Nelspot 007 (Nellie) and pre-1990 LineSI Bushmaster (Bushy) back bottle ASA (BBA) valves share the same attachment bolt pattern and outside diameter as the Redux.

There is no specific brand of valve to look for, that I'm aware of. There were many "Nelson-clone" guns produced and any sharing the bolt pattern with the "Nellie or Bushy" should work.

Tubular BBA valves can be used with the Redux with only one modification:
  1. drill the recess for the mounting bolt head slightly deeper

Issues With Converting BBA Valves for Redux Use:
  • slide clearance for the bolt head (drillable)
  • slide clearance for the whole valve body (tombstone valves require milling)
  • valve length - the slide will extend past shorter valve bodies which may interfere with a remote line or bucket changer

A photo of an un-milled LineSI valve, tombstone cross-section follows. Note the interference points.

Unless you have a mill, go with a tubular valve, like the one in the next photo.

Note that the LENGTH OF VALVE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE MOUNTING BOLT IS APPROXIMATELY EQUAL.

The next photo shows the above valve installed, with the slide at maximum rearward travel, without the return spring installed.

Shorter valves will be covered by the slide which may snag a remote line.

Original Post Below

I was skimming old Redux-related threads and saw a post in one of the threads about DSA and Ironchef97 using LineSI Bushmaster valve bodies on the Redux. (ref: Redux Duck questions, Redux Duck questions)

Thanks to PMI 3 here on M.CB, I've tried a pre-1990 LineSI Back Bottle ASA valve on a Redux and deemed it possible.

Post 1990 valves are similar to current Phantom valves and won't work; outer diameters are wrong, length is wrong and the position of the bolt holes is wrong.

More details below. I will update this thread when the LineSI valve I've ordered arrives and I've adapted it.

BBA would need to be milled down due to the sliding frame. The SI valves work fine just needs a bit of trimming.

Tried the LineSI back bottle valve last night (thanks PMI 3!).

It fit nicely with only a tiny bit of the metal at the sides interfering with the slide. A few minutes with a mill bastard file would take care of that.

The hole for the long bolt would have to be tapped about 2mm deeper so the cap head section would be recessed inside but that's 30 seconds with an appropriate drill bit.

It was a pre-1990 valve tested. Someone had an original LineSI glossy ad handy (ha! M.CBers rock) and the post-1990 valve looked like it wouldn't work.

Sorry I completely forgot that you messaged me a while ago about this, here are the two pictures I have of my Line SI valve body on the redux:

I won't be able to take anymore anytime soon as Steve has my redux in for some mods. I REALLY want an extended barrel so I can fit a lapco silencer on the end...

As you already stated, the valve screw hole needs to be tapped deeper, and the sides need slight filing down.

Thanks IronChef97! That's exactly what I was looking for.

Nice feedgate and grips on your Redux.

Update: got the pre-1990 LineSI BBA valve in and mounted.

I've taken a photo, pre-machining.

You can see the areas that need machining circled in white for clarity.
The Redux slide is flush with the rail. The areas wider than the rail, behind the valve, need to be machined off.

Additionally, the hole for the cap-head screw needs to be machined slightly deeper to allow for clearance.

More once that's done!

Different valve, no machining

I picked up a slightly different BBA valve, thanks to Blackrain here on M.CB.

This one doesn't have the "tombstone" style section at the rear like the LineSI valve bodies.

Instead, it's a perfect cylinder with an angled cut at the rear where the ASA is tapped.

As you can see from the attached photos, it fits under the slide with no machining.

The final photo shows the fitted valve with the slide pulled back to its hard stop, with no pump return spring installed.

It will need to have the bolt hole tapped out about 1/4-inch, similar to the LineSI valve, to allow slide clearance of the a cap-head screw.

Looks cool dude! I hope Steve comes out with a factory version soon. For an $1100.00 gun I want it all factory. Maybe this will help him make up a few BBA's.
