I understand that. I'm on my third set of SS inserts and these are the nicest yet. I have used Ty's brass inserts also. I installed all inserts in the barrel and checked them while slowly rotating them also. Then I screwed on the barrel adapter and checked.

Yes at one point I was using bad paint, but that was one game. I then bought some premium and that was nice and rounds rolled nicely and was all relatively the same size. While it shot nice and straight I was still breaking paint. I was using a .679 and the paint was about .678-.679. The insert checks out from what I can tell.

It's always the same story with them.

mailmanmike Since Monday! That's more than 4 hours though, so according to those cialis ads I should see my doctor.
tlane77 I think for a non-chemical chubby it's 6 hours before its time to see a doctor. So you should be good for another couple hours.

Think about it, though... if the barrel isn't damaged and not too undersized it's not causing the breaks. A different barrel isn't going to fix that. You need to find the real problem, and it's usually the paint. I'm not trying to be a SP fan-boy or be rude about your accusation that the Freak is at fault for your barrel breaks, I'm really just trying to help you identify the real problem with your paint breakage.

I'll just hammer out a list of things that come to mind, even if it's a repeat:
Debris in hopper, pods, source of paint
Inhomogeneity of paint geometry
Burrs in the path of paint travel
  • inside the hopper
  • the feedneck
  • the breech
    • detents sticking out too far
    • bolt wearing to a sharp edge somewhere along the face
    • eyes sticking out too far
    • eye cover screws sticking into breech
    • paint shell caught in eye/detent slots
  • nicks on the entry of the barrel
  • too much underboring
  • too high of an operating pressure, even if shooting below 300fps it's possible on some designs.
  • inhomogeneity in shell thickness
  • weak seam between paint shells
  • stacking of paint is such that a ball is partially chambered before or during firing (huge problem on some gun designs, see older angels, evil omen, et al.)
  • Jihadist paintballs

I tried a different path and found a few bugs that I am working out waiting on one last insert to test again when time is available (maybe 2/19 dunno tho) I might try doing the sandwich at some point just not sure yet =)

my stock barrel and adapter has only rarely had a roll out and usually its because I loaded early and pointed down (yay) but (knock on wood) my marker has been continually outperforming me so most of my testing is being done to avoid changing the stock parts (all mods have been done on spare parts)

=)

What about it? Personally, I think it's a bad idea. There are problems inherent with boring phantom barrels for freak inserts in that it creates a very thin wall for the trapezoidal threads. I've personally had one *fall* off my phantom. It didn't break under an acute load. It fell off when I took the barrel bag off to chronograph before a tournament, and the fracture was radially around the threads leaving the threaded portion still in the body. Additionally, you could still obtain a 7/8" OD for the over-the-barrel pump to glide on simply by picking a cocker barrel you like in terms of length and porting, and when you send it to the machinist for boring for freak inserts just have the OD turned down to 7/8" along the length. You might have some profile invariance due to whatever previous profile invariance existed below 7/8", but those can be filled in with clear casting resin or something IF it creates a problem for the pump. (or just avoid that all together and make sure you have at least 7/8" of material where the bushings ride on the barrel).

the current testers have not reported any problems with barrel wall failure, my freak bored phantom barrels have been consistently fine in that regard too - will double check them next time I am in my gear bag but I have an 11in and 8in that I use all the time on my spare black phantom that are freak bored and cant recall a time that I had an issue.

dunno tho - sounds like a reasonable concern - any of the guys who have done the mod care to chime in?
