| Raid On Natzweiler In Early May of 1944 America was preparing to undertake the largest amphibious landing in history. The Invasion of Germany occupied France, Operation Overlord or D-Day. In the late afternoon hours of May 3rd, a large force of B-17’s departed England for a rare night time mission with the intent of striking various targets near Strasbourg, along the Germany/France border to destroy rail stations, bridges and infrastructure to hamper Germany’s military from moving forces rapidly into the beachhead area once the invasion started. A single pair of B-17 aircraft were designated with a special top-secret mission, stripped of guns, bombs and non-essential personnel the aircraft could transport a small number of personnel. Aboard the pair of aircraft was a special contingent of 82nd Airborne Rangers. Their mission was to parachute into occupied France, obtain much needed intelligence on command and control facilities and make contact with the French Resistance to destroy key communication facilities just prior to the landings at Normandy. Early in the mission, the second aircraft of the mission developed problems with it’s oxygen system, forcing it to either abort the mission or drop to a safer altitude. The commander of the airborne element made the decision to continue the mission and the two aircraft dropped below the formations of B-17 that were taking place in the bombing missions. Enemy anti-aircraft fire near Strasbourg became intense. The first B-17 in the element was struck and was last seen going down in flames over Strasbourg. The second aircraft was hit only moments later and the crew/personnel were forced to bail out just to the east of Strasbourg. Within 2 days of the failed mission, French spies relayed to British Intelligence that a number of the surving crew and airborne personnel had been captured and moved to the concentration camp at Natzweiler, Aproximatly 50 km from Strasbourg. Among those captured was the American Colonel that had been in charge of the special mission. This immediately caused concern among the allies as the Colonel had partial knowledge of the planned invasion of France and the names of French Resistance leaders in the Natzweiler area. A rapid decision was made to send a highly trained unit of British Special Forces to attempt to recover the captured personnel before the dreaded SS could transfer and interrogate them. This mission, simply known as “The Raid On Natzweiler” would have huge ramifications on the success or failure of the planned D-Day invasions. If the information that was known by the American’s became known to Germany, then Operation Overlord could become one of the worst defeats in history. On May 7th, a second night time bombing mission of the Strassbourg area was hastily planned and executed, with a single aircraft being set aside to drop the special forces unit to attempt the rescue. GHOST RECON, BALL BUSTERS BRIGADE & DROP ZONE PAINTBALL Present: RAID ON NATZWEILER The Allies: British Special Forces, American POW’s, French Resistance The Axis: Germany Mission 1: “Cat And Mouse” Times: 10:15 - All Units/Personnel Stage 10:30 - Game On 11:30 - Part A (Contact with Spy) Scored - 50 Points Possible 12:30 - Part B (Struthoff) Scored - 25 Points Possible 13:30 - Part C (Natzweiler) Scored - 25 Points Possible - End of Mission 1 The BSF parachute, under cover of darkness into a densely wooded area to the southeast of the Natzweiler Concentration Camp. They must then make their way undetected to one of three small farm houses on the outskirts of the village of Natzweiler to rendezvous with a member of the French Resistance to obtain much needed intel on the concentration camp and German strength in the area. Once obtained, they must somehow manage to free the prisoners from the camp before moving on the remainder of their missions. Unknown to them, their landing was detected by a small contingent of german infantry in the area. The Germans quickly dispatched patrols into the area to try and locate and capture them. Part A: The Allies must rally and move to one of the three farmhouses (selected by random drawing prior to game on) to make contact with a member of the French Resistance while avoiding capture. The French Resistance leader will then have information sending the BSF to locations to obtain the help of members of the resistance. Part B & C: The Allies must move to capture and hold Struthoff and Natzweiler Village. Restrictions: The Germans may defend the objective locations, but may only send two 15 man patrols out into the woods to locate and destroy the enemy. The French may only join the fight once the objectives activating them is seized. The French and American's are free to “snipe” or kill german forces around their hold location(s). The Americans are captured and may not participate until freed other then what is outlined above. The BSF are free to use the entire field. NOTE: ALL missions contain special missions, roles and missions within the missions, each worth points for their respective sides. Unit commanders will be given a complete breakdown of point values, speical missions and special Roles to be filled. ************************************************** *********** Mission 2: “To Create The Fog Of War” Times: 14:30 - All forces stage 14:45 - Game On 15:15 - Ammo/Supply Depot Scored (only if not destroyed) - 50 Points Possible 16:00 - Radar Site Scored (only if not destroyed) - 50 Points Possible 16:45 - Comm/Command Site Scored (only if not destroyed) - 50 Points Possible The Allied forces, now combined with the French Resistance and American POW's faced a new dilema. With the countryside swarming with the now alerted German forces they had to complete several missions and attempt to disrupt the German communications network that was alive with chatter attempting to locate and capture the marauding forces. Part (A): Allied destruction of the ammo/supply depot near the concentration camp as a diversion to attempt to pull German forces away from their true objectives. Part (B): Allied forces move to destroy the Radar site Part (C): Allied forces move to destroy the German Communications and Command Bunker NOTE: This is a "All or nothing" type mission. If the Allies destroy an objective within the alloted time frame they get the points. If the Axis prevent the destruction, they get the points. The Mission ends when all three objectives are destroyed or at the appointed time. IF the objectives are destroyed with enough game time left, we will reset and run the mission a second time, with scoring and objectives the same. NOTE 2: ALL missions contain special missions, roles and missions within the missions, each worth points for their respective sides. Unit commanders will be given a complete breakdown of point values, speical missions and special Roles to be filled. ************************************************** *********** Mission 3: "The Path Of Escape" Times: 17:00 - All units stage 17:15 - Game On 18:30 - All objectives scored - 25 Points for each Gun Emplacement, 25 Points for Each Pilot The Allied Forces, vastly outnumbered and facing capture or worse, knew they still had several vital objectives to complete if they were to have any chance of escape back to England. The small airfield near Stuthoff was ringed by a number of anti-aircraft gun emplacements that could easily take down any aircraft during their planned takeoff with a stolen Junkers JU 252 Transport plane. And to make matters worse, they were now down to only two personnel that had the capability to pilot the aircraft. But first, those anti-aircraft guns had to be taken out of commission, and they were on a tight schedule to make their rendevouz time with their fighter escort back to England. Part (A) Allied forces move to destroy the anti-aircraft gun emplacements (4) Part (B) Allied forces must safely recover and escort two pilots to the jump off point (TBD) for the final assault on the airfield. NOTE: This is a "All or nothing" type mission. If the Allies destroy the objectives within the alloted time frame and safely escort the pilots, they get the points. If the Axis prevent the destruction and/or stop the pilots from arriving at their objective, they get the points. The Mission ends when all objectives are destroyed and the pilots arrive at their objective, or at the appointed time. NOTE 2: ALL missions contain special missions, roles and missions within the missions, each worth points for their respective sides. Unit commanders will be given a complete breakdown of point values, speical missions and special Roles to be filled. ************************************************** *********** Mission 4: "Into The Wild Blue Yonder" Times: Sunday 09:45 - All units stage 10:00 - Game On 13:00 - All Objectives Scored - 200 Points for who holds airfield at 13:00, plus 25 points for each pilot(s) that is safe, in one of the towers on the airfield at the end of the mission. With the departure window now closing rapidly, the embattled allied forces faced a final daunting task. To secure the Stuthoff Airfield, capture the JU 252 transport plane and make their escape, all of this while keeping their remaining pilot(s) alive. No easy task, as by now the German forces had learned of their escape plan and were determined to destroy the allied forces to the last man. Part (A): Allied forces move to capture and hold Stuthoff Airfield until end of event. Part (B): Allied forces must protect their remaining Pilot(s) Best of Luck to both sides....your going to need it! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ghost Recon and Ball Buster Brigade in conjunction w/ Drop Zone Paintball present: 2nd Annual Raid on Natzweiler-Tank vs. Punisher May 3-4, 2008 A 2 day event @ Drop Zone Paintball Park Lawrence Kansas Directions: DropZonePaintball.com $40 both days preregistration at all Drop Zone locations or website by Friday May 2 /$50day of event-includes all day air:Small donation of a commodity for our troops appreciated!!
