Discussion: Scenario Rules, Roleplaying and Cheating

I thought I would post this for discussion. It seemed to be a hot topic in other forums.

Scenario games usually include roleplayers. Different games have different rules but where is the line? What is good roleplaying versus bad? What do you consider cheating that others might look at differently?

I always liked the concept of "spies", as long as the idea was well developed, and PREPLANNED. Meaning, you can't suddenly decide to switch sides. There has to be rules. Adds a cool dynamic for scenerio games.

I don't like deadman walks, in any form. As a ref, it causes too many accidents, and pissed off players. Its a common trick at scenerio games to do "borderline" deadman walks, such as just walking casual, hoping people will ignore you. In that case, you really can't ban something like that, but it just seems to me to be in poor taste.

"wounding rules". I've never liked them because they are usually too complicated, and hard to enforce/keep track of. Like, arm/leg hits don't elliminate you, but either prevent you from moving, or firing, etc. I understand its designed to better replicated a military-style scenerio, but its always a bit confusing.

One thing thats nice is that at scenerios, gun-hits usually do not count. Since I always run a large vertical tank, well, thats a pretty nice sheild then!

Yeah, but I don't think it's against the spirit of the rules, unless stated. I walked across an empty field and raised my team's flags in the abandoned town, after which I surrendered 2 and shot 3 (including the opposing general and his bodyguard). No one challenged me and I never posed as an eliminated player.

See, that's where we differ. Gun hits should always count. I'm not gonna get into the whole real war vs. paintball argument. Speaking from experience, when you get lesser experienced players who hear that gun hits don't count, the blindfiring goes up. As far as I'm concerned, if your marker gets hit, you get hit. And I've never been at a scenario that had that rule, BTW. I'd say it causes more problems than DMW's, even of the kind I outlined above.

Deadman walks are not allowed anywhere near here.

Injuries are just lame and pointless.

No gun hits is also lame and is generally unsafe IMO. I agree with CB on this.

Spies and roleplayers do need rules so things do not get out of control. I have been involved in many games where off field crap has determined the final score because the rules were gray, and were skirted.

I will disagree on the deadmans walk, as long as it is done properly. A dead player will have no problem telling you they are dead. If you aren't situationally aware enough to ask a player who appears to be dead, yet is doing very un-dead(not zombie) player like actions, if he is live and or cover and prepare to shoot funny acting player, you deserve the rolling you are most likely to receive. he is doing you a favor by teaching you a lesson you will not soon forget, if you are bright enough to learn from YOUR mistake.
On the other hand, medics and the abuse of medic rules because of players misunderstanding rules that they should be well versed in, have led to more cries of cheating than any other thing I have ever encountered on any playing field. This problem is fostered by fields who do not enforce their medic rules in favor of keeping players in the game when they make a mistake. If you are shot, you freeze. You have 60 seconds for a medic to reach you. If he does not reach you in time you go out. You do not go look for a medic. You do not wander the field. Using medic judges also confuses the rules further because they encourage you to seek out a judge, and take the judges eyes off the game to tend to you. There should not be medic judges. If the size of the field makes traveling to the deadbox a huge inconvience, then utilize ref staffed on field field hospitals with a 200 ft. exclusion zone to prevent hospital camping by opposition teams.

I don't like "medics" but have reffed a game where "field hospitals" work really well. I think that medics can be abused or appear that someone is wiping. For example, if two players are hiding behind a bunker, one a medic, it can appear that the player who is shot is playing on even though he is following the medic rules. The field hospital I have found is good because the players have to get out of their position and you get the satisfaction of seeing them leave but they don't have to go all the way back to the dead box.

Dead Man Walks - I was taught way back in the day, if you put your barrel condom/plug on, say your out/dead, and/or put your hands up in the air, you are out and should go to the dead box, without talking to live players. If you walk quietly without doing any of the above and can get away with it, I don't see a problem with that.

I think the shooting an arm or leg thing is way too milsim for me, same with gun hits.

What do you think about "fake" props that individuals or teams might bring to a game.

The one thing that drives me nuts is when people pretend to be be ref or staff. I don't want to have to guess who is a player and to me that seems like a big safety issue.

"I will disagree on the deadmans walk, as long as it is done properly."

This is the #1 fight starter............

Because it's considered cheating....and causes "out" players to get over shot.........

Fake props are a part of scenario. If the game director allows them and you can B.S. the other team into believing that it is real, is that any different than James Bond peddling a fake bomb to Terrorists? Nope, and that is half the excitment.

I agree.

I also love fake props. Or things people think are props. Nothing funnier than when a team shot their own team for my bag of cheese poofs left in a building at blanding.
