I think everyone needs a beer oir bubbly beverage of choice right now. I though my thread on a Camera coke can was bad, this one may be worse.

Remember, it's a game. Nobody is trying to win a pile of coin or out to kill someone.

Personal experience:

There are good refs and bad refs, just like there are good players and bad players. I've seen my home fields refs be really good some days, and sometimes really bad (like the last big game).

Speedball refs are hit and miss at a big game setting. The good ones have a level head and a sense of humor. The bad ones are the hardcore "AGGlets" that believe Smart Parts is the bible and Oliver Lang is their divine lord.

Please don't sweat the little things. Ref's will make mistakes, even the really good ones will make a bad call. Thank them for the 100 good calls they made rather than the one bad call they make. I'm very thankful for refs, even when they pee me off at times.

I think this thread needs a 24 houir cool off period and needs to be closed down for a day or so. Mods...

I think Tal addressed this yesterday morning telling people to calm it down a bit. If there are any more issues however this thread will be closed for a while.

I've tried to make sure that I don't jump in at some of the statements that have pushed my buttons, and I believe that I've let enough time go by that I can chime in.

Some of the posts that state things regarding refs helping teams and how bad that is have tweaked me a bit. There is appropriate help that refs are IMHO obliged to provide, and there are inappropriate types of help.

An example of appropriate help would be a player trying to find a particular location. "I need to find and stay in this spot for 20 min." In my example the location is marked on the handout map that everyone is given, it's night and you can't see the numbers placed on the physical locations. (This happened to me in my first 24 hour game.) Here it is completely appropriate to point the player in the correct direction. If players are having trouble finding locations on the map, it is cool for a ref to help, it's actually part of their job. I have also given tips to young first time players on how to flank someone. Of course I usually know the player that's about to be sacrificed and get a little too much fun out of it. However, I also know that I've helped give a kid a better experience.

Inappropriate help can be given purposefully (I hate this, and admonish my refs when they do it) or inadvertent (I try to teach refs how not to do this). When I'm walking, as a ref, I will scan side to side and I'm very conscious not to stop with my gaze on a player. That player may have worked very hard to find his hiding spot, and doesn't want it given up. I also never look directly at props that are supposed to be found. Just one of my things.

Jacko, I know you, your team, and the Discipline Lords did an awesome job at the Judge Dredd game at Sherewood. I know two of the new refs that were helping out and I believe whoever educated on the rules did a good job.

Since it was my first Viper event I kept a copy of the rules in my vest. That way I had any questions I could look at the rules before asking a ref. I plan to keep a copy of the rules on me at future events. As a player I feel it my responseability to check the rulebook before consulting a ref. It makes it easier on the refs

Thumper, I am going to check out that rules thread. Most of the refs at my home field mainly ref tournaments. We have very few woodsball events, but are looking into getting more going in the future. I feel the scenario reffing manual will be a great asset to us.

I think it is great if a player has the rules in there pocket. It helps in two ways. 1. There are times when we forget a rule or get mixed up with a rule from another game. 2. it means that the player will have the rules open to the spot in question and makes it easier to deal with in the middle of a game. I wish all players would do it.

thank you my fellow junkie.

these guys are doing up a real work of art on this handbook and have been working on it for a very long time. i know most of the ballers working on this project and they are veteran scenario players with an extensive amount of experience on both ends of the game. i do recommend keeping an eye on this @ pbjunkie. should be a mandatory read for all hybrid refs.
