It was cool to see someone rush a bunker thinking he is in the clear, only to get popped by someone close by, lying down on the trail. And there were many times when I saw someone on the ground with his marker pointed one way, and 15' or so behind them there was someone from the other side standing up and shooting the opposite direction. Being inside the Alamo in the end was intense. And it was amazing that paint made it through the crosses in the sliding windows to eliminate many players. One player slammed into the side of the building and was promptly shot out. It was funny to watch a ref light an M80 and then see a player walk right on top of it. The ref tried to chase him off and he finally moved before it went off. The reffing,to me, was great all around. They were on top of things. Even saw 2 refs running in for a paint check at times. Thanks to BG, Jake, Bossman Sheldon and the staff at Wannaplay. A very good day all around. Looking forward to taking pics at the next game.

The whole event ran very smoothly considering the logistics Sheldon and his people had to deal with to get uniforms and guns for everyone. This made the event more special than our scenario did. This was Sheldon's pet project and Jake and I were glad just to be part of it for the field and his players. The players made this game great. I spent as much time on the field as possible and I was very impressed with level of sportsmanship. Getting the players to accept being eliminated by a rolling artillery barrage was no problem at all. Seeing them running with balloons was just special. I did get inside the Alamo at the end and that was absolutely one of the most intense actions I've ever seen. Incoming through almost every window and door, paint grenades flying in, the thumps of enemy players running into the walls outside, and the constant hammering of paint on the walls made it quite an experience. Thank you to- Drum, Stuffy, Heazelnut, Animal, Skippy, and the 120 others who attended. Special thanks to The Dark team general- Mark-Yellow#5, who led his team to a strategic and tactical victory and Matt Crawford, of Targets of Unusual Size, who led the Light team to enternal banishment on the Rim Worlds. You guys did great. Thanks to Sheldon and his reffing staff for a doing an excellent job of keeping everything running safely and smoothly. Our demo ref Phil and our tankers- thanks for adding the very special effects. Last edited by BretG; 06-30-2008 at 06:12 AM.. Reason: Speeling |

About a half hour after I showed up, Bret asked me to be the general for the Dark Side, so I said, "Sure, why the hell not." The format played right into my hands - Bret runs missions in a 'beat the heat' style, i.e. with breaks in between, but because it was hot, they were shorter than normal. Also, he fed me great motivation for the team: if they got enough points, they could get their own gear back. So I dangled that carrot in front of them, and told them they only had to give me 15 minutes of everything they had, and they delivered, time and time again. I made simple but calculated plans (with one big gamble later in the day...) and they payed attention and executed well. We tied one mission and made a planned stalemate of another, but never lost one. I attribute most of our success to the fact that in general, the guys and girls on my side were collectively pretty aggressive and willing to take some risks. That's not to say our oppostion wasn't tough, too - it was smash-mouth, in your face paintball all day. I also liked the special elements in the game - both sides used artillery strikes well, and 'buying' back gear was well arranged. More people stuck with the stock issued equipment than I expected, which was pretty cool. I think a lot of very new players came out for this one because of the gun & uniform promotion, so I bet we get a lot of future players out of it. Big thanks to Bret & Jake for organizing, and Sheldon for running with a unique idea. Also, I want to make a special point to recognize the refs. They are consistently first rate, on top of their game, and good at what they do. I heard a number of positive comments throughout the day, but I think the defining moment came with the "gamble" I mentioned above. I called for 4 consecutive artillery strikes to clear a path through enemy territory, which meant the refs had to be on top of it to clear out the players across a wide area pretty quickly. They were ready, quick to respond, and efficient at that task. While the plan and our side weren't quite coordinated enough to completely capitalize on it, I still want to hand it to the refs for doing their job well.
