| Active Member Join Date: Apr 2008 | people chalk up cheating to the grey area because they have absolutly no understanding of it. One of the huge reasons I posted the scumbag thread was to say "look, this is what the grey area is and here is how to do it properly" and unsuprisingly people reacted the way they did. Sometimes I wonder if teams and individuals try to purposfully keep the grey area a big "secret" from everyone so they can keep using it as an excuse to cheat.

I've played with some really good tacticians before who could find a gray area not mentioned in the rules and exploit it in spades. I really respect the ones who go over it with the producer first, since it takes some guts to propose something that might earn you a dedicated rule addendum, especially when it's a big advantage. A big example of that was all of the things we were politely asked not to do to the NPCs at VIP. The gray area created an issue there (NPC safety) so it was remedied. On the other hand, many other gray areas continue to exist, I think deliberately, in order to provide room to innovate. I can count the players who do this artfully and thoughtfully on my hands, and I consider them to be one of the factors that keeps scenario fresh and fun. Your scumbag thread illustrated that well. On the other side, I've also played with some people who sort of make up their own gray areas and ignore rules they don't think are "correct" or "fair" or more recently the ever popular "realistic" to justify what they want to do. this is cheating blatantly and there is no room for it.

| C4 Founding Member | I'm going to start with a disclaimer, I haven't read the entire thread yet. I'm at work and saw this, read a few posts and figured I'd chime in. In my last year and a half of coordinating games at APP in Colorado, I integrated the SPPL penalty system into the rules I used. I did this because there were a few players that were causing issues by cheating and other unsportman like conduct. I made it clear that this was going to occur, and prior to each game I listed off the offenses and the penalties for each. For those unfamiliar with the SPPL penalty system, an infraction costs your team points. So the individual's action does lead to penalizing the entire side/team. I read off everything prior to the game and explained each so there would be no doubt of the cost of getting caught. The thought is that this will generate positive peer pressure, causing the trouble makers to straighten up. It pretty much worked. We ruthlessly enforced the penalties, and the result was that at 'half-time' neither side had a positive score! The second game we used the penalty system there were only a handful of penalties handed out. After that, they were a fairly rare occurrence and people were commenting on how much more fun they were having. Of course for major infractions (safety and otherwise) there is always the 'ref punch.' IMHO if you receive one of these, you have made yourself ineligible for any door prizes (a very individual punishment). So I believe it's possible to penalize an entire team, without killing their chances to win. If you have a list of infractions and the penalties to go with them, then nobody can say that they didn't know they were going to hurt the team. I look at it as a way to offset the advantage that they were looking to gain for their team. As a player, I have told leaders of a team when some of their players were behaving in ways that could cause problems as well. The thought was that they would take care of business internally and that would be the end of it. |

Not only are you blatantly cheating (which is the worst lable to get) but your violating every fundamental of the game bar saftey. No way would anyone go that far. That said there are very easy ways to manipulate the SPPL rule system I would rather not comment on here
