I would LOVE to build one. I could build one, no plans though. I just don't have the resources.

I want to build a tank. I just like designing and building things. On the perpetual backburner of things I want to do but can't afford is a really awesome RC tank.

I myself love to get tanked!

But on a more thread level approach, A basic Flintstones tank, foot powered, is an excellent style for beginners. The cost is relatively cheap and they are easier to make legal with the chassis rules and speed limits. I used one that was built by Darryl and Royce McNeil of the Texas Rangers and it worked very well at Blanding one year. The maneuverability and stealth of the tank were hands down better than the one that SpecOps had on the field.

Yup, my team tanks currently the count is 4 with one of them slated for a major overhaul [#2 Sidekick].

2 - based off Suzuki Sidekicks
1 - based off Mazda Protoge Wagon
1 - based off Electric Golf Cart [Ninja Stealth Death Tank ] This one is going to Blanding this month.

here is a good place to start for a turret ring, it will save a lot of time effort and money [img is a link]:

Our golf cart tank is most likely the deadliest since it is small and battery powered [very very quiet] but the bigger tanks get the most "WOW" factor and are good at intimidating "crunchies" though are big targets for laws

Grendel... that ring is very cool... pricey but cool!

Can you drill it so that you can actually mount a turret frame to it?

Yup, you attach to the outside surface of the upper ring with bolts. You can do the top surface but you have to be careful to not get anything in the way of your bearings running surface. The upper ring is not captured so when you get done you need to secure the upper ring by making "clamping" wheels [roller blade wheels work] below the whole assemblyto keep the top ring from coming off.

#2 Sidekick [aka T-34] got hacked up a little while ago in a poor attempt to improve it and now is slated to be torn down to the ground. It will be rebuilt with emphasis more on playing paintball then looking necessarily like a "real tank". We've learned a lot over the last 3 years tanking and looking at others' tanks. In our oppinion the Sidekick or similiar sized vehicle is the largest practical tank to build for most fields and 4wd with a low range is a plus. We wish our vehicle based tanks had automatics. Pumping a clutch all day makes for a real tired left calf and knee.

For your main gun do not waste your time on a PVC Barrel go straight for 2" aluminum pipe and fittings. Our guns out shoot pretty much anyone we've come up with for accuracy. There are faster shooting tanks [we use breach loading dump valve acctuated main guns] but we really tend to use our main gun very little. Most of the time we try to work with crunchies as a mobile bunker/weapons platform.

When we start tearing down the T-34 we are going to document everything we do and share it with the public.
