Yup, shot out and hit the outside corner of my eye (I had the bolt turned so I could re-insert it past the hammer). Apparently, it's under a lot of tension.

Am I better off looking into a bolt at this point?

I still don't see how it shot out of the bolt.. once again it's a captured pin, if the pin is fubar'd and then I would see about replacing it.

If you do put a screw (like a long grub screw) in there, you would need to drill and tap the hole... and cut a quick strip slot.

Actually, my other Piranha has some kind of custom bolt with a set screw for a cocking lug - I just unscrew it when I'm going to pull the bolt. That one has a one-piece bolt like the long version of a PGP's; I assume it's set up like that since it has an autotrigger. For this one I might look into a Cooper T or something.

As for what happened... I have no idea. I pushed the lug in to slide the bolt into the gun's body, and once I'd twisted the bolt enough for the lug to clear the edge of the slot between the two tubes, it shot out.

I have a feeling it may have been misshapen after years of use.. that's the only thing I can think of.

Unless you have a mint condition gun I would still recomend a quick strip slot... allows you to perform on the field bore swabbing without fiddling with a tool or a pin.

So I finally got around to picking up a Cooper T to replace that bolt with. However, it has no lug whatsoever (it appears to be threaded for one) - is that normal? Or should I be calling PPS and seeing if they can send the absent lug?

There are two kinds of pins for these....the ones like you previously had, are spring loaded. The other kind are pins that screw in. The Cooper-T you got is that kind. You can get a screw at a hardware store and grind the threaded edge so it doesn't groove your hammer. Pretty easy stuff.

Yeah, my Dremel-Fu ain't half bad. I just thought it was odd that the bolt would come with no lug, but it sounds like some of the stock Sheridans were that way...?

Yeah some of the PMI-1's and PGP's too. They had the screw in style. I've had a few Cooper T bolts come across my bench that needed the pin.
