my first taste of brass

I bought a PGP off CL for $30.00 and I'd like to mod it.

what are the best mods for these....( without having to re-solder anything)

1. what can I do to make a better pump stroke.
2. what can I do to prevent roll-outs (without tape, nail polish, or denting it......what's a widget?)
3. are there any mods for the valve? ....it's a cartridge valve.
4. I thought I heard somewhere on here that one could make it fire the air through the bolt, how can I do that?....will that require me to mod the body?
5. what is the best way to get the original black paint out of the barrel and other tubes?

Also! I've already decided to make a new hammer for it, what would you guys recommend for the material? what about 303-308 stainless?

and one more thing ....is there a way to tell how old it is?...it says it's a PA Series, SN 800707616
thanks guys.

With a PGP you don't need it to fire air through the bolt. Larger Sheridan markers do that. You don't really need that on the size of a PGP.

Best mods....speed changer for your CO2. Palmers has them. And an RVA (rear velocity adjuster). Then just play with it. You could get a feed adapter, but I don't like them.

a wedget is a Palmers "dent" put in the barrel to prevent roll=outs. There is a yarn mod you can do. A piece of hard down your barrel will snug the ball a bit. You need to change yarn pretty regularly. But if you don't want any of the other options, that's something to try.

not a sure fire way to tell how old it is by serial number. Sheridan didn't necessarily go sequentially.

brasso is the best way to get paint out of the barrel. Use a little brasso...attach a rag to a drill and buff. don't do too long though.

Once the brass bug bites, you might have trouble shaking it. ask lots of questions. there are a bunch of us who can help out.

......these tools >S & R Tool< it's where I work now.

they told me I can make what ever I want on my time off as long as I don't get in anybodys way.
I'm just an apprentice but they are teaching me everything there is to know about machining....so making a new hammer or bolt or anything for that matter would make for a good learning expeience....

what kind of steel should I use for a new hammer?
and if I made a new bolt could I cup its face...or would that be pointless?

I think a new hammer would be kind of pointless honestly. Is it a 2k pgp or an older one? If it's older here's some things you could machine:
Bolt (you could possibly make a centerfire with a longer pump rod and moving the lug)
Plugs
RVA
Pump arm
Pump handle

mostly I want to make a new hammer to get rid of the "first click" while pumping. And to make it lighter....an RVA was already in the plan.

and sorry, I don't know how old it is....this is the only PGP/ brass gun I've ever touched....so I don't know how to tell.

Just modify the existing bolt to get rid of the first click.... no need to make a whole new bolt.. and lighter? why?

1. I think a new hammer may be worth it, or modding yours to reduce any dragging or binding on the sear or bolt pin is probably easier. This will help the pump stroke.

2. I just dent them with a flat head screw driver

3. I have modded a cartridge valve with good results on both a pgp2 and a p68. Using a drill press, open the output hole to a 15/64" and drill a hole through the bottom of the marker centered on the "transfer hole"( the hole between the two tubes) the same size then deburr. You may have a hole peek through to the outside between the tubes and will need to plug it with solder, clear epoxy etc. you will increase consistency and efficiency.

Put a lighter valve spring in and make sure you have an RVA. You should get about 30-40 shots over 250 FPS depending on paint size and temperature.

4. I haven't had a problem with the stock bolt.

5. LB has it.

A cheap and easy mod, is to drill the the mainspring plug and tap it for a 3/8" set screw to make it an RVA.
