Attaching a Trigger Guard....How?

I have a wood stock that I've refinished. It's perfect. It was a blank and has never had a trigger guard. I have one to put on. How? I don't have pins that are normally in.

Can I start a hole for screws and then just screw in flat hex head screws?

Do I need to go the whole way through, just because most KP's do?

Looking from help from the expert stock guys. I want to do this right.

I marked the place for the hole and used brass inserts. Had to use a off-set screwdriver to put one of the screws in under the guard.

You can find them at most hardware stores, useualy in the specialty drawers.

I just used small screws. They were somewhat decorative, but nothing fancy.

I use small oval head wood screws. Drill a pilot hole, slightly smaller than the screw diameter then thread them in.

You could also use sex bolts. Drill appropriate size through hole and insert female end from inside stock and male through trigger guard and screw firmly. I think they are known as barrel bolts also.
