Cartridge valve vs. Old valve

Has anyone here noticed a difference in durability between the cartridge and the old style valve? I've only ever owned old style Sheridans and have always met with disappointment - chamber plug failures, leaks, etc. I own a valve tool, perform regular maintenance, and just baby them when they're not in use. My lack of luck with these guns has garnered a lot of smartass remarks from my buddies that I'm cursed. Faithful as always, I'm, considering another PGP. If anyone could give me some input, I'd appreciate it.

The main problem with the old style valves is that when you get them ... they aren't anywhere close to new. The seals, in the newest of them are going to be over 15 years old. So when you get your hands on something with the old style valve, you might as well replace the seals immediately, unless you have been told they are new.

I've never had trouble with the old style valve, and I actually favor it over the cartridge valve.

I no little about the early style valve Sheridans, But being that I have completely redone my 2K PGP valving, see NO weak spots in the design what so ever !!

Upgraded my Piercer/Valve pin with a Palmers Dyna style. With it's seat material running against brass no issues can arise with propper care and lubrication IMO.

Drawback of cartridge valve... You can't side tap the valve chamber.. you need to use an adapter of some sort.

I have a Palmer's seal kit on order every time I buy an old Sheridan. Maybe I just keep sticking dirty 12grams in there? Do you guys experience frequent chamber plug failures?

I used to experience chamber plug seals going fairly often, but then I switched to using CCI cup seals as a replacement for the soft pinky-orange ones. I've found they hold up much better since they are a harder material so they don't get deformed as easily.

No, not at all. My original PGP (my first gun, bought new in the mid nineties) is still running on the seals it left the factory with. Do you oil run a little oil through the system regularly? All of my Sheridans have been rock solid, even with very, very old seals. The only sudden failure I've experienced was actualy a PPS Dyna Valve in a Typhoon.

I also favor the older style valve over the cartridge design. I don't think there is any significant diference in durability though.

I prefer cartridge valves for durability and ease of use/maintenance but old style valve can be tuned to a much greater degree. One trick that has really helped me out with cartridge valves is to file flats onto the brass piece that is between the two end pieces. I put them just under the o-ring that sits between the middle and 12g seal end pieces and I've found a 9/16" (IIRC) fits perfectly and I don't need strap wrench to undo the valve anymore.

The old style valve only works better for stroker conversions, otherwise they are both capable of comparable efficiency.
