The Ion i want.

ZDS Paintball - Custom Work Gallery - Mechanical Ion Conversion

I never figured i'd want an Ion just because of the simple fact I don't shoot electros, at all. But i found one that would suit me perfectly.

That looks awesome. I would like to build one if the electronic internals of my Ion go kaput one day, I but I wonder how the 4-way valve is installed in the grip frame?

I drilled a hole in through the rear of the frame, and slipped the four-way inside. THe front of the valve is epoxied in position inside the frame. Normally I would have tapped the hole so the four-way would have screwed into position instead, but I didn't have the tap readily available and didn't want to wait to order one.

The pics on the webiste are a little outdated, it looks a little different now that I added an exoskeleton...well, more like parts of an exoskeleton...it's all a little more stable now instead of using "spacers" which is what I did previously.

Ions are cool

My question on that is ,how do the ball detents stay in? My guess is that's what the exoskeleton was partially for?

The detents I used stuck in there on their own pretty well. I only played with ait a few times but I actually never had any issues with that.

They would push themselves out after a while but I was keeping track of it. Although it might not work so good on somebody else's if they tried (actually, I know it won't, since the detents have gone through production changes twice since 2005).

These days I use an exoskeleton just so I don't have to worry.

just posted this in the other mech ion thread:

the gun. instead of a 4-way to control "dwell" (like you mentioned) i used a
bolt with dual tail orings so it seals the firing chamber. therefore when you
pull the trigger the entire firing chamber is always dumped, therefore i'm
running my pressure near 140psi and still getting 280's fps.

here's a thread on it:

my mechanical ion project (pics) - PbNation

if you don't read the whole thread i shot it all day on co2 and got about 900
shots from a 20oz with no problems (no breaks at all). just adjusted the
trigger last night and now it's walkable (vid on second page of thread).

further plans may include a 'cocker style LPR before the 3-way to lower the
pressure holding the bolt back. should get less kick, better efficiency, and
lighter trigger pull, but may slow down cycle time a bit.
can be done with less than $30 in parts (fittings/hoses/3-way/QEV), and i
could swap a board back in, in a few minutes. if you don't care about easily
swapping back and already have a QEV it'd probably cost you $10 and and
hour of your time. (these prices are if you have a local clippard dealer,
airsoldier.com has the parts, but will cost a little more).

I think that ion was part of that huge lot of markers that was recently stolen...

Does this mean you could use CO2?
How was the bolt modified to block the inlet.

co2 works great.

i bought a warrior brand bolt. any bolt with dual tail orings will seal the
firing chamber. you could also mod the stock bolt, but i do not have
access to a lathe.
