I was going to make a comment about the Navy being the weirdest part of the military. But we all know that's the Coast Guard.

No disrespect to the Coasties here, some of those guys are hardcore. The CG falls under the DOT. IMO that precludes them from being considered military. Yeah, they can fall under the Navy in a pinch but let's be honest. They're basically the Border Patrol for our waters. They're only considered .mil because it's PC and they feel left out.

That's much nicer than I would have been. My ex-wife's stepson graduated from Coast Guard Basic last month (or early this month). I only know because my oldest daughter told me she was headed to NJ to watch him Graduate. I asked why he didn't join the real military.

Oh, a few years back when I was working for SCMPD, we got done with briefing, and as always, our LT told us to "be safe out there". One of the guys on my watch, a former Ranger, told him, "If I wanted safe, I'd have joined the Coast Guard." I doubled over in laughter.

That's pretty funny. Grunts have a unique way of doing that. I bet the LT got a little red in the face.

I didn't see a reason to be mean, some of them do have difficult and dangerous jobs. Heck, you couldn't pay me to go some of the places they do in some of those boats. I just don't see them as .mil, a valuable national resource? Hell yes, without a doubt. Not short changing what they do, just calling it what it is. *shrug*

I just like giving them a hard time. In basic, during one of our classes, we were talking about Joint Defense and inter-branch cooperation and how all of the branches give each other a hard time. The MTI teaching the course finished the lesson by stating, "it's all in good fun and each branch respects what the other does and we rely on one another. And we all have a mutual disdain for the Coat Guard." We all laughed.

But in all seriousness, I have respect for anyone willing to put their life on the line for others.
