No disrespect to the Coasties here, some of those guys are hardcore. The CG falls under the DOT. IMO that precludes them from being considered military. Yeah, they can fall under the Navy in a pinch but let's be honest. They're basically the Border Patrol for our waters. They're only considered .mil because it's PC and they feel left out.

That's much nicer than I would have been. My ex-wife's stepson graduated from Coast Guard Basic last month (or early this month). I only know because my oldest daughter told me she was headed to NJ to watch him Graduate. I asked why he didn't join the real military.
Oh, a few years back when I was working for SCMPD, we got done with briefing, and as always, our LT told us to "be safe out there". One of the guys on my watch, a former Ranger, told him, "If I wanted safe, I'd have joined the Coast Guard." I doubled over in laughter.
