Um. (New Sterling owner questions)

So I got my new Sterling, and it seems pretty sweet, but there are a few things that are confusing me.

1) Everyone talks about adding a return spring, but mine springs back into place even though there isn't a spring visible.

2) The pump stroke really doesn't seem THAT smooth. Maybe that has to do with the weird springyness, I don't know. Regardless, my prostock feels smoother at this point.

3) Is it not supposed to cock without air?

you can add a return spring but some feel that it ruins the smooth pump stroke of the sterling.

As for smoothness, IDK what to say. I bought a used one so mine may have been "broken in" someone else may be able to comment on that.

and no the sterling isnt supposed to cock without air. It is very similar in design to a phantom in that way.

Mine cocked without air and it was fine. It really doesn't matter.

I had the old Sterling with the the straight sight rail and the grip frame that was made by Proline, though. That might have something to do with it.

Sorry, I guess I should have worded my first question better. I was wondering if the Sterling is supposed to return, even without a spring. Because mine feels like there is a spring, even though there isn't one visible.

On the old version, it's not supposed to. Mine had a homebrew return spring mod on it, though.

Is your Sterling the newer kind with the smoother sight rail and the .45 grip frame?

hows your springing internally.... if someone put a spyder spring in that model it's gonna suck... also make sure your bottom tube is clean..

Pictures would really.... help us, help you.

External pictures both sides (assembled), and include a few with the internals exposed

Theres also a special secret amongst sterling users if you have a set screw on your bolt loosen it up. Theres a magic amount of slop required.

allright.. good news you have virgin stp internals and a stp spring it should be very soft..
clean your lower tube.. hammer and pickup
after assembled put light oil on the pickup rod.. just in front of the brass nut.
I cannot see the top of your valve housing (where the bold slides along the top add just a little vasolene or some sort of grease to help the metal on metal contact)
lastly check your be sure that your bolt slides freely in and out of the marker clean and add light amounts of oil where necessary.
I did not see the back of the bolt but i'm going to assume that you don't have a setscrew.
and thats it.. it should have a light stroke that is equal or better than a t-2 or 6.5 although it will feel alittle more sloppy since there is no guide for the pump arm.
