autolocking "vintage" threads ?

Just an idea...not sure if it can even be done. There's been numerous occasions recently when the kiddies have been migrating over, and have been "grave digging" old BST threads...some threads from 2006! Obviously a sign of laziness and inattention, since the post dates are displayed on the upper right, and they don't bother to check any further than the first post, once they use the search feature to find whatever keyword they're looking for.

Would it be possible to autolock threads that are a (whatever...year maybe?) old, to prevent them from constantly rising back up to the top in the BST areas? Maybe make them only accessible/updatable by the original poster? I'd hate to have them done away with entirely, as old sales threads are often the source of good gun porn and price references.

Just my Sunday afternoon pondering

A temporary solution would be to ask that anyone posting a BST edit and empty their initial post after completing the transaction.

I agree though - what's a reasonable time frame? 3 months?

One of the culprits is jonesing big time for a Micromag it seems and is posting on pretty much every thread he can find on this and other boards.

He doesn't seem to read the posts in the threads that state that the marker is sold, payment received, item shipped etc.

It looks like he's getting a good deal on AO. RT Micro for $200 so the situation should end soon.

Some of the other boards delete the ad after 90 or 120 days, can't remember.

PGPOG does a manual lock old sales posts. For here inactive sales posts should be locked then deleted a year after the initial date.

I don't like the idea of deletion at all. Old sales posts serve to provide a baseline for pricing and should at least be kept archived like the rest of the site. Locking would be a good solution to the problem without eliminating old data.

Don't delete them, please! If i am looking for info, old forsale posts often have excellent info. I lock old forsale threads after 1 -1.5 months of inactivity over on Customcockers, and that seems to work well enough.

I fully agree with these sentiments! I would prefer locking instead of deleting them since I do try some research before I post items for sale, unless I already have a good idea of the item's worth.

Locking over deleting is a good idea. I'm guilty of using old posts as a price baseline or just being nosy about a kind of gun and searching for pictures that way. I do agree locking is a good idea, since recently people have been bumping the really old threads asking if stuff is for sale. It's too tempting to make a snarky post thereafter asking isn't that what a PM is for?

I agree with lock the old threads. I have been guilty of responding to the grave diggers, lol.

The information contained in BST threads is valuable. I don't think it should be blanked out....

I say let it be... no need to micromanage the common folk (me)
