| a forum dictionary/guide I'm completely new to forums. When people talk about bashing, spimming (I think I got that right), etc., I'm horribly confused. Also, I've realized that I have trouble reading between the lines when looking at someone's post. It seems that taking something at face value is not always accurate anymore. Any help alleviating the confusion would be helpful.

| a lot of negative forum activity comes from people just being belligerent. bashing is generally based by somebody saying "I like A for B reasons" and then somebody will bash by saying "I hate A for C reasons" drawing the first person into an unwinable argument of opinion. Flaming is a personal attack for really any reason, usually breeches of forum ediquette or just because person B doesn't like person A. This usually spins into an online brawl untill a mod come along. Spamming is overposting. One example would be posting a question in an appropriate part of the forum and then posting the same question in inappropriate parts of the forum in a desperate bid for immeadiate attention. just be polite, watch your spelling and grammar, and don't feed the trolls (reacting to bashing and flaming) and you'll be fine on any forum. |

| Thank you. That explains a lot. It seems really difficult to avoid bashing and flaming when a thread is asking for opinions. But it shouldn't be too hard not to feed the trolls. Okay. I feel much more confident now. By the way, did you ever sell those nightmares?

| Disagreeing is not bashing or flaming. As long as you disagree in a respectful manner. It's one thing to say "Oh, I don't think that's right because of X, Y, and Z reasons." while it's another thing to say "Only an idiot would think that, moron." Just be respectful and you get respect back. |

| Bashing is a little different than politely dissagreeing. On an internet forum, dissagreements can become debated at lenth, can become emotional, irrational, ect, as it is simply a discussion. It becomes bashing when you dissagree simply to cause trouble, one example would be going to an automag forum to discuss the advantages of the autococker over the automag and Tom Kay's sexual preferences. While those topics can be dissagreeed upon, doing so in front of an audience that feels strongly against what you have to say constitutes bashing, or simply posting to pick a fight. While most bashing is a little more subtle than the examples I listed, the context is is the same. |
