"By location" registry (State)

While trying to get our little Texas event going I got to thinking it would be nice if there was a listing by state of the members that lived there. Maybe just a "sort by" option for the members listing to list in alphabetical order, by location, etc.
This would make the orginnziation of these events easier, especially if it was where you could email/pm them to make them aware of the post. I know there were some people that didn't see the post about it. For the ones that were not interested in knowing about them there could be an opt-out to not receive notices.
I suppose the questions are:
1)would people be interested in this?
2)would it be secure in the sense of not getting a bunch of emails/pm's from outside sources....in other words, spam?
Any comments or ideas welcome!

The only problem is actualy getting people to add thier state of residence. I mean there is a place for it in your profile but it seem 60% or better don't bother to fill it out. But those are the type of people that won't commit to things anyways so I guess it really doesn't matter.
