So what's the smallest insert size it will work with WITHOUT shaving the bolt?

Will it fit inside your smallest insert

The whole front tip of the MRT is a rubber bumper, so it MAY be able to collapse down smaller when compressed and fit into a smaller insert, but I can't confirm that. The only person I know who's used one with a insert-type barrel was only using like a .682 or .684 insert.

So I did some measuring and the MRT bolt is .691/.692 (it's a little tricky to get an accurate measurement with a caliper due to the fact you're trying to measure a soft front bumper). Freak inserts just aren't going to cooperate with that bolt; I tried manually slipping it into a .679, .682. and .684 Freak insert and it sticks in all of them even if you just barely put it in (cue someone with the sexual inuendo).

I've also realized why Canukistani hasn't had any problems- the I-Fit inserts have a nice, long, gradual chamfer into them, which the MRT bolt tip can easily go into up to about 3/8". The I-Fit inserts are also solidly sandwiched in place by the lip on them fitting between the adapter and the barrel, so they can't be pulled back into the breech by a stuck bolt like the Freak inserts can.

So in summary, if you want to use an MRT bolt and be able to bore-match your paint to your barrel, I-Fit is really the only way to go. Otherwise, you're stuck with a Stanchy-modified stock bolt if you want to use a Freak bored barrel with inserts any smaller than .690.

This is a bummer for me since I got my barrels bored and was planning on running the MRT bolts in my pair of TPX's with cocker detents for absolute maximum efficiency. Now I guess I'll have to put them up for sale to offset the cost of an I-Fit setup.

Makes a lot of sense!

I would love to compare consistency and efficiency of a SSC bolt and freaks vs ifit

Ok so a slight update just for general knowledge-

The TPX bolt tip only sticks into the barrel barely enough to get the o-ring against the end of it. It does not appear that the o-ring actually enters the barrel judging from me having the bare breech block, bolt, and bumper o-ring mocked up in firing position. The stock bolt tip is quite a bit bigger than the MRT bolt tip, the MRT doesn't really start to hang up until you get tighter than .684 in the Freak inserts. I basically put my .682 insert on the lathe and chamfered one end with sandpaper from 80 grit all the way down to 400 grit and that was enough to get the MRT not to stick at all. Really just the first 1/16 of an inch needs to get opened up. If you're intent on sticking with the stock bolt though, the Stanchy mod will probably be necessary as the stock tip is big enough that I doubt you'll be able to chamfer the thin walled Freak inserts enough to work.

Also- even with the end of it chamfered down really thin, the Freak inserts are just big enough not to get drawn into the bore of the breech block if the bolt does stick. So no worries there at least. .682 is about the smallest I was planning on going for an open bolt marker anyway, though I'm confident since the outer diameter is the same chamfering a .679 or smaller insert will work as well.
