Soryr for my stupidity but what is the difference? I thought the 98 threads where the same. Or is it like CCI where it is the same thread but the end tapers different and wont allow it to screw in.

It is slightly different. The threads are slightly thinner or thicker, I can't remember. Anywho, new barrels will fit in both old and new markers, and old barrels will fit old markers.
