Originally it was Ben Tippmann, but then Tippmann Inc. sued Ben and part of the agreement was not to use the Tippmann name.

I also think Paintballmuseum.org sounds much more official, but since we grew up with VintageRex and its a little quirky name we tend to defend that name. I guess it depends what you want to drive on with, no reason to kill the VR name either, we keep it as a mascot, Curators can have the title of VR also, so its more of an internal skunk works.
I have a feeling there is something in the mail thats going to be keeping you busy for awhile..

I say leave it as is, "paintball museum" has no flair at all.

Paintballmuseum.org is my vote. Outsiders looking in don't remember it and see no obvious mental link to help keep it in there memory long enough to look it up. Just what I have seen when telling people about it.
Mean no disrespect to the 'Rex site.

I just don't see it.

youtube.com isn't video.com
ebay.com isn't auction.com
mcarterbrown.com isn't vintagepaintball.com

I just don't see the point. That's like saying well MCB.com isn't standing out enough for old/vintage paintball so let's change the name to vintagepaintball.com. Leave it alone.

I see your point. And I could agree to keep it the same.

"youtube.com isn't video.com
ebay.com isn't auction.com
mcarterbrown.com isn't vintagepaintball.com"

The above is true. But each of the above had a growing period for a product that appealed to the masses when the name and product linked together in ones brain.

youtube = you and television play on words.
ebay = started as auctionweb.com

Heck, I was one of the first users of Hotmail.com and for way to long when giving people my email address I had to explain that the address did not have anything to do with me being subscribed to a Hot Male service. True statement.

So it all depends on the reason for the initial question about changing the name. Is VintageRex stagnant? Are the masses aware of the site? Is there a target audience that we are not reaching for some reason? If so...why?

Is there a desire to advertise the site in different venues? If so, which would work better for people who have no idea what it is? Auctionweb.com or Ebay.
Or in this case vintagerex vs. paintballmuseum.

So I respectfully say I would vote to change it if the intent is to try and grow beyond where we are now. And we could all say to the new people..."Back when it was Vintagerex you whipper snapper...."

so how about this: since anyone typing paintballmuseum into the address gets redirected to vintagerex anyway, just leave vintagerex alone. instead, we associate that name to "a paintball museum" by having that as a simple tagline under the logo.

like this for example:

this way:
1. people who know vintagerex from before will get there no problem
2. people who don't remember or know vintage rex will get redirected to it when they go to paintball museum, as they already would
3. once people arrive, the tagline will associate the name to the type of website

everything is accounted for.
