Looking good! Have you ever seen the VM Spacegun, or the Dave Youngblood (Carter-milled) VM? They prove there is a LOT of metal on the VM which is available to be milled to your desires. Go wild!

Up front, like near the ASA? Remove the ASA and open it out a bit, the "internal EC mod". That will also give you an idea of where you can cut back. Enlarge all air passages. Sectioning the trashed VM (or cutting large chunks out, or cutting it in half) will give you a good picture of where the metal is thickest and can really be played with. I have some milled VM bodies in a box somewhere, if I can find them I'll post pics, but right now I'm recovering from yellowjacket attack so don't think I'll be in the garage soon.

One area where I have not seen much done is to machine "shapes" into the VM. Usually, people are just interested in making it smaller, like my old Spacegun. But there is so much excess metal, you could machine 3d lettering, pictures, waves, bones, whatever. Plus the usual gills and such you see on custom cockers. Chris Mader has some good cutaway shots to give you an idea where the excess metal is:

What type of VM body are you looking for? I have some plain old tiger striped VM body's in the parts box that need a good purpose in life. Want one?

I was planning to have Rainman make it actually Basicaly what I'm looking to do is duplicate the milling in every detail except make the lower tube stay stock length to correct the error that was made...thus making the gun 100% functional again. Planning to have it clear anno'd after all is done. |

Sweet! I hear he does good work. I have a pile of bodies if you want one; just let me know. I think I have a couple that are a bit beat up in places that will be disappearing anyway. For the benefit of the original poster; if I recall correctly the Spacegun, being much shortened, has the main spring moved to the lower tube (there's no longer any place to put the upper back plug in place). The new mainspring is from an automag? Anyway, it's compressed to the point where the gun beats itself up when it's fired. Chaos, please correct me if I was wrong there. It's been a few years since you and I last sat down with it...
