Question Vm-68 cup seal and Toothpaste trick?

Could someone explain the toothpaste trick with vm-68 cupseals? It is supposedly a way to resurface the seal?

Toothpaste is a mild abrasive. Spinning the cupseal in the valve causes them to mold to each other and smooths imperfections.

like using valve grinding compound to seat a valve in an engine, just less abrasive... i usually use a cordless drill on low speed

Many toothpastes have abrasives. Look for 'silica' content. If you happened to have a toothpaste without it, you're just working with soap and wouldn't do much.

The steel wool doesn't hurt the rubber seal? My old one has a definite gouge in it and I didn't want to make it worse.

High speed drill and 000 grade steel wool. it wont gouge it. water can be used as a lubricant, like wet sanding.
i have cleaned up some pretty hairy looking ones.
