I shot a VM68 a few years ago and was suitably amused with it but never got one myself. I prefer the styling and layout of the VMX though. However, the few I have seen for sale went for rather exorbitant prices, relative to their non-PTP counterparts, of course.
Are they rare or something? If I am looking for a first VM to test the waters with, is a VMX maybe a little out of that range?

PTP had, or still might be having a huge scrap metal clearing sale. Check the MISC or dealers sections I can't remeber. They were selling off all the old VMX bodies, $25 for two IIRC.

Yep, you'll need a working VM to slap in there. You'll also need to cut down the trigger housing.
