I've used that method probobly a hundred times in the 90s.

CLEARLY there are safety concerns there. I would not suggest it unless the user clearly understands the hazards.

I specifically remember a few times when I wasnt paying attention and went to remove the valve WHILE THE TANK WAS STILL ON. As mentioned above, the valve shot out like a rocket. That would have easily blinded someone.

The tougher part is getting the valve back in. The trick is to pinch the spring so that it sticks to the cupseal.
