If you're gutsy and have alot of air:

remove valve side screws

take everything you can out of the back of the VM

press butt of gun into pillow

screw tank into front air adapter

BOOM!

There's your valve! Getting it back in is just a matter of poking it in and aligning it with the screw holes on the side.

Don't listen to Russ.... chuckle head.

Get a 3/8" Course Thread Lag bolt from the hardware store.... cover most of the threads from the back forward with tape to protect the inside of the lower tube.

Remove the hammer from the lower tube, screw the lag bolt in to the valve, then remove the small screws that are on the side of the lower tube. Pull straight back on the lag bolt and you will bring the valve with it.

or you can go to the hardware store and purchase a carriage bolt long enough to get in there and thread into the valve (I forget the thread pitch) to yank it. Slightly safer than blowing it out with CO2.

But yours doesn't go boom...

as far as safety goes, that's why you do it into a pillow or blanket.

I have had a VM valve shot into my thigh under pressure and I highly recommend not doing things that go boom.

Sounds like you mixed up the order of airing up and unscrewing the valve screws!

Go to home depot and pick up the screw. It's only like $2. It'll save your life.
