Anyone have any special tricks for the removal of the VM front ASA? Is it blue or green loctite and will heat make the removal process easier? I have used rubber and wrenchs before but it is a pain and the round smooth surface of the asa makes it difficult. Thanks as always guys! -Dan |

I use a large pot of boiling water on the stove, that way you can keep the water hot in case the loctited part sticks on the way out. just put it back in the water. edm

I've used vicegrips before, with brute force. . . . . . Oh, by the way, don't use vicegrips. Completely ruined my ASA! Though it gave me a good reason to chop it off.....

The boiling water and a strap wrench should work depending on how old the loc-tite is. Another method is to use a non-marring vice with a set of "V" jaws. You can use vice grips or a set of channel lock pliers...just take a couple pieces of 3/4" rubber vaccum hose and put one slice down it laterally and slip those pieces over the jaws of the pliers. You can also keep that set of pliers in your gear bag for use on the field. -Jake

I've done it many times - boiling water is your friend Get a pot of water to a boil then throw the body in and let it sit - I usually do 20 - 30 minutes - let the hot water work - oh turn off the stove - just let the body sit in hot water - don't cook it (vm soup anyone?) Get a vise or a buddy and vice grip to hold the body another vice grip or pliers on the asa and just start twisting - it should come apart fairly easily. Needless to say you should use a towel or foam or something to protect the bun body and asa from the vice grip/pliers

Thanks for the help everyone. I ended up boiling the water and then turning the water off once it boiled. I then stuck the body in (with all internals removed), leaving the front end of the body submerged for around 15 minutes. I then used some rubber and some vice grips to pull the asas off. I should have used some thicker rubber since I scratched a few of the asas but no where near as bad as I have in the past. Now I am sticking them back together. I have done one so far with purple loctite, which is a lighter strength loctite securing screws and such. I tested the one I did with purple and it didn't budge when I put a tank on and then pulled it off. Do you guys think Purple will be sufficient or should I used Blue? Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate the help! -Dan |
