Does a VM need liquid?

I brought one of a few VM's I recently picked up to the Sac Pump Day field just to try out. Seems my neighbors are getting unnerved by my shooting in the side yard so I minimize it whenever possible. So anyhow even with the bolt choke screw all the way open and the valve set with the biggest port up, it still won't shoot over 170-ish. Pete mentioned that it probably needs liquid to chrono good. I'd never heard this. Is this true? And if not, anything besides a heavier mainspring to get the velocity up?

liquid as in liquid co2 or liquid as in gun oil.. in either case I dont see how you are gonna make a 130fps difference without swapping the main spring for a stiffer one unless the internals are just seriously gunked up.

My old ex-rental VM shoots fine without worrying about liquid in it. Might need to mess with the springs. Then again is you tip it up and get liquid into it it does spike like mad.

That said the things a beast and likes to be cleaned with whiskey. =)

My VM ran fine on a non-liquid diet. They can handle liquid like a champ tho.

Which port size do you have your valve turned to? Check out this link for hints on how to check and adjust it.

Curt, you might want to try drilling one of the holes out to be really, really big. Even the biggest valve hole is pretty damn small. Besides that, the only other thing I could think of is that your mainspring is worn out.

Every vm I ever worked with we would drill out the smallest valve hole till it touched the orings then run syphons, then the only problem is getting it to chrony down.
make sure the aluminum part of the upper bolt hasn't loosened from the stainless part, that would allow the air hole to be out of position.

I think that only matters if the upper transfer port is drilled out as well. Mine is slightly larger than 3/16" (maybe a metric size?). I believe that a valve port larger than that would be useless. It may also reduce the blow back flow.

Allrighty thanks guys. I didn't think they did but wanted to be sure. I'll check Chris Mader's site and see if I can pick up a new mainspring.

How would you drill out the transfer port? Can I access it if I remove the feed block (I'm at my office right now)?
