Mattee has kidS (plural) they have assorted costs associated with them =)

also the big $$$ in the industry is usually absorbed by the shareholders not the devs - depends on the company though I suppose...

Your salary in game development is 100% dependent on your role, seniority, and the company. It's almost hard to take a median as an associate content designer is not going to make anywhere near a senior level programmer (you're talking $42k to $125k and up) and the whole scale shifts if the company pays higher or lower than other studios.

To generalize, I'd say game devs make slightly more than your average white-collar skilled labor job. There's some ancillary perks too, like working in a cool industry, attending E3 and the like, usually free food/drinks, nonexistent dress code, etc. There's also some massive downsides, not the least of which is obscene unpaid overtime (I know Cricket's been working some long hours lately and I've been in perpetual crunch since I started; this week was 76 hours over 6 days). Then there's the fact that you will likely have to move clear across the country if something happens to your job since studios are so few and far between, your "fans" spit constant vitriol on forums and in comment sections, management woes...

I feel like you have to really love games and the industry to make it worthwhile. Otherwise, I'd say look into software development for anything other than games since you'll get a lot of the benefits without most of the detriments.

yep yep yep and yep

the uncertainty of the industry has kept me from going back to it - my experience was working for 5 different corporations in 9yrs time, fortunately in the same building. but that constant changing of management is stressful. Also, my love for video games faded in those years. On the plus side my profession is agnostic in regards to what industry I work in
