Shortest Ram?

I have an ANS mini ram, and when coupled with QEV,s it is about 1/4 inch longer than I would like. Is this the shortest ram on the market? From where it sits flush to the backblock to the top of the QEV it measures 2 7/8ths.

I am afraid ANS Mini ram are as small as you can get, any shorter than that you will have a problem of pushing the bolt far enogh back to clear the feedport.

Thats what I figured. I was trying to save money by not having it milled into a mini. Maybe I could drill where the ram goes into the frontblock and make up the distance there. About how many threads do you think a ram needs to bite into and remain stable?

I saw that you had one for sale a while back. Did you get a chance to try it out? I would assume that it has the smaller nipple sized threads, that I would have to drill out to accept my QEV's. Do you also know if I could take it apart to clean out the metal shavings from redrilling/tapping?

I don't see the point in that. You have the whole tab on the front block anyway so you should just ensure that the ram threading is the same length as the mounting tab.

If you're considering machining the tab down then do not go for less than 4 turns of the thread. Any less and you risk it eventually failing considering you're threading into aluminium.

Remember too that the ram has to be long enough to maintain the correct stroke length. You can gain by "turning" the caps so that the air goes in through the sides but only up to a point unless you want to get really fancy and custom make the whole ram such that it has true side ports and a very small chamber area.
