Well, that was only part of the reason.
Modifying the valve is incredibly easy - here's a peek inside my prototype pump M98:
That's just a piece of copper clad PCB board with a hole drilled in the center just large enough for the valve stem to pass through, and attached to the rear face of the valve with screws (I used socket head cap screws on the prototype as shown, but all the kits used button head screws instead). (disregard those other holes - I think they were false starts, or I munged tapping them and had to start over) I think the PCB board I used was 1/32" thick - I went with the PCB board due to stiffness while being soft enough that it wouldn't wear away on the valve stem (as a steel plate might). Realistically, a piece of sheet styrene or ABS plastic may do just fine. The only other thing I did was to remove the o-ring from the hammer, as you don't need it if you're not trying to capture blowback gas.
