    Paintball on TV

There are so many hyper-niche shows out there, especially when it comes to competition shows. How in the world is there not a paintball competition show? Seems like an easy pickup for a streaming platform if it’s produced well. Would think there would be a decent enough audience surrounding it and could pump some interest into the game/sport. Likely only a 1 season show but who knows.

Now I’m not talking speedball. My idea would be a group of competitors already familiar with many aspects of paintball (you know like a group of MCBers). Could have different competitions each episode on interesting fields. Mech/pump (OC/SC)/single shot/speedball/ctf/build your own marker/etc. different game types and other shenanigans.

Throw in a decent amount of comedy, a monetary/custom marker prize.

Seems very absent in a world where I’m seeing cornhole and mini golf on tv.

Anyone think there’s a market for this? Any ideas on the show you’d like to see?

Could even do a paintball travel show. Check out new fields around the country/world. Meet new players/try new styles of play. Ha that one may be too narrow though.

Mostly because it's not interesting. There's a handful of paintball documentaries that exist, and they're alright but the main thing about paintball is that it's fun to play, and not fun to watch no matter how you tweak it or present it.

Things like you're talking about do exist in short form on Youtube... the best content is done by airsoft guys, though.

I think the only way it would work is this you create a reality TV show like making the band.

Run a fully documented tournament series with teams derived of nobodies. Where they are competing for a huge cash prize(say a million dollars) Trick is, the prize is split amongst the team that wins the tourney. Additional kick is, the lines are managed by team captians whom are part of the staff of the show. 100 people enter the paintbrawl house. Only 5 will walk out paintball champions. Spots on the lines of the 10 teams are played for. Drama happens in group housing in the evenings. Cuts are made, teams are formed, more drama. Teams start being cut as a whole as further cuts are made. It gets more and more cut throat until we have a nasty rival battle to watch.

I think it would be the only way to get my wife to watch a paintball centric show.

I’ll do the sound. Following a group or team for a year is the way to go. Reality tv style. I work in film and tv production.

            -This, unfortunately.

I, naturally enough, am a big paintball fan... and even I'm not all that interested in watching paintball on TV. Especially when it's some talking-head type trying to explain angles and tactics like it's a friggin' football game.

One of the big things is that it's very hard to properly record a game. In football or baseball or hockey, the camera just has to follow the ball. No one cares what's going on with the players that don't actually have control of the ball or puck.

Paintball is different. In a 3-on-3, you have six players, all involved in the game. If you have four cameras, what happens when players #5 and #6 get hit? You have the flood the field with cameras and cameramen, and then to make a decent video, somebody has to edit twenty hours of video into a three-minute game. That ain't easy or cheap.

AND... as far as tech or equipment goes? Nobody really cares about that, either. The only people interested in a "how to rebuild or repair X marker", are people that have that marker, and want to fix it. And gun repairs, or even mods, don't really get people interested in the sport.

It's made worse today by the simple fact that there IS a ton of stuff online. You can watch an hour-long video of cats knocking over Christmas trees, videos of people crashing cars, forging knives, running trucks through mud bogs, blowing up appliances with Tannerite, shooting any firearm you can imagine, climbing mountains, radio towers and any building taller than six stories...

You can watch people build cars, play video games, play chess, throw darts, ride motorcycles, fly airplanes, go swimming, or bake a cake. Weld, machine, sew, cook, juggle, paint, carve, ski, paraglide, program, sculpt, eat, breathe fire and burp the alphabet.

Any paintball video, to get any 'traction', has to be entertaining. It has to be fun to watch, and that's tough to do.

Soldiers of paint was pretty good.

I think a documentary CAN be done well.

But if you follow any of the professional circuits the problem is, assuming each week is a new event. Every episode will feel the exact same. Complain about mistakes you made at the last event at the beginning, practice, drama. Practice more, go to the event and say you failed when you come in 3rd.

And yeah it's a lot of the same problems, you can't see the paint flying in the air, can't get a sense for overall tactics, can't really get live reactions/on field discussions because of how short each point is

Some sort of show about middle aged long term drunk/stoner guys who play games all over the country for no specific reason could potentially be cool. Kind of like Trippn’ With Leigh…to be executive produced by Bacci. I’d Patreon that.

Anything that involves speedball or tries to be Orange County Choppers can go straight to the hell though. I’m perma tired of all that trash.

I really would like to see the same two teams of 5 play at big 2 day events on opposite teams. Each player of that team is using a different playstyle for the main event. Mostly action cams, possibly one media crew member per team and the occasional drone to not disrupt the event for everyone else. Have them play side events like the mech or pistols tournaments to change things up. To force an interaction at every event between the 2 teams have a specific objective that forces them to cross paths.

That way there are more things to shoot, fields/terrain are noticably different at a glance. Shows the various way to play. Show Pb life on and off the field. Interacting with players and vendors that aren't part of the 5 would be nice. The most important is showing people a more laid back and accessible way to play instead of major tournaments or small games where a single good player can just roll a team of newbies.

Ofc you add the tv magic like fake drama, product placement, scripted scenes and attractive people that otherwise wouldn't be interested in pb.

not sure how to go about having them not being recognized on the field so they aren't targeted/followed by players who otherwise wouldn't know who they are. Flat out hiding their identity makes them harder to relate to as a viewer.

All the old DerDer, Monkey With a Gun films did a good job. Today we have Go Sports that just covers pro stuff but do a good job. There won't ever be enough interest for television.

That's because it didn't really follow a paintball game, but some people who happened to be participating in a paintball game.

You know those WWII animated youtube videos that talk about how a battle went? That's how you present a paintball game. so it's interesting... Except that almost 0 games work like that and it's just people doing whatever they want to do with no overarching tactics.

Wonder if a fishing show template would work. Travel all over for games, special fields and big games. Hang with the local scene, maybe even add special challenges to the games. Like each field the main person is given a box of equipment and a different marker. Electro one field, stock class the next field etc and have a Top Gear option of having a budget and going to buy some equipment. Big games could be done as social episodes, add in some traveling adventures.

Would be watchable and fun. Keep it light-hearted and spread comradely of the sport.

Too bad I’m neither handsome on or rich, or I’d be doing this right now!

I thought we established that paintball wasn't interesting to watch.
Fishing shows are somehow less interesting to watch.😀

You're on to something with the social episode and travel adventures. That's what has potential of being interesting.

                            Ok I got it.

Find individuals who think they are hot shit, "paintball is easy, I'll use a rubber knife and drop down from the trees etc etc."

Put them up against. Well pretty much anyone who knows what they are doing

Bunker and blast them. Repeat as needed

                            It's a comedy

Some good points about how hard it is to film and follow the action. Then how much time it would take to edit the footage into something interesting.

There just has to be a way to make it engaging. Ha I just saw a cornhole tournament air on tv.
