    Heads up for cross-border sales

In addition to the "only use USPS" rule, the following may now affect Canada to US and possibly US to Canada sales. Received from Ebay yesterday but I have heard rumblings from other sellers elsewhere.

The US has announced that the de minimis exemption for imports (the threshold below which imported goods won’t need to be charged duties and fees) from all countries will be eliminated as of August 29th 2025. It’s crucial to understand how this change may impact your shipments.
Duties and customs clearance: Starting August 29th, all shipments to the US—regardless of value—will be subject to applicable duties and customs clearance. As of this date, Canada Post has advised that its current Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) shipping services to the US (Tracked PacketTM USA, Expedited ParcelTM USA, or XpresspostTM USA) are not compliant with these changes.
There is a significant risk that non-compliant shipments arriving to the US beyond August 29th will be returned to the sender. Therefore, effective August 25th these Canada Post services will be disabled on eBay Labels.
To ensure a smooth cross-border shipping experience, we strongly recommend sellers take the following actions immediately to avoid in-transit shipments from being returned.
    • Use a commercial carrier such as UPS, FedEx, DHL, or Purolator that can handle US customs clearance; and note that discounted UPS and FedEx rates are available through eBay Labels.
    • Ensure the item location for your listings is accurate.
Include accurate Harmonized Tariff Codes as well as Country/Region of Manufacture (country of origin) information on your listings & customs declarations.

This certainly sucks. Between the exchange rate and the tariffs makes it very challenging to order parts from the States and makes selling into the States a lot more difficult and uncertain.

so in the border switch, if an item had tracking before it crossed the border, what happens then?

You should still get updates from the original shipping company

If I ship Canada post, it transfers to USPS. You can then track it on USPS

If the package makes it from Canada to the US, there is likely to be a 35% duty on the declared value from what the news is saying.

I've heard on the radio that package under $100 not shipped by a business might be exempt.
But I wasn't able to find the confirmation yet.

There was another announcement today that looks like access to covid vaccines will be getting more difficult

If that turns out to be a significant hurdle my family will be traveling up to Canada at some point to get it, I can bring a load of packages with me if that ends up being the case.

Maybe chill with Cdn_Cuda for a bit

The Supreme Court is fast tracking the tariff case for November:

“The Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to expedite a case challenging President Donald Trump's authority to impose broad tariffs under federal law.

The justices scheduled arguments for November, an unusually quick timetable by the court's standards.”

                    Source: Newsweek

I’m guessing they wanna fix it before Christmas. My advice is to hold off on cross-border purchases unless it’s something important.

But this has no bearing on the ending of de minimus.

Chappy I think that if the Supreme Court rules the tariffs as illegal, the exemption for de minimis will be back on the table.

The biggest issue now is that as it stands, the federal government would have to reimburse businesses anywhere from 750mn to 1bn. That’s another reason why they want to fast track it through. So it doesn’t keep accumulating.

And now you have businesses betting on the supreme court overturning the tariffs and are buying up importer’s rights to their reimbursement claims. Which I found kind of interesting. I don’t know. Let’s see what happens.

This is great and all, but even if they rule against the tariffs there is still a very real chance that this administration will just ignore the courts like they have in the past.

From Canada, the fees are prepaid by the shipper or at least that is what the Canada Post website says.

I have also heard rumors that the attempts to undervalue your sale may be thwarted by "AI assistance" in determining true market value. No credible source on this but who knows.

I just dealt with this today again and you can just type in what your product is and you don’t have to use AI. I used a picture today and use AI today but I still paid nothing because it originated from USA.

Man that's all we need, some AI using curated and prices eBay listings as a basis for what things should be worth
