So it turns out the two biggest DG course installers in this country have a cartel arrangement not to compete with each other. I dunno about the US, but here that's worth 7 years jail time.

Seems paintball isn't the only sport with BS business ethics.

I'm sure they'd make the case that it means they can make more money and install courses faster, but I really doubt it actually works out long term for the sport. People are less likely to push go on an install when they only have one provider, it's massively helpful to have multiple bids for a buyer's confidence they aren't getting ripped off. In this case, they literally are getting ripped off. FFS.
    _____________

Meanwhiles I can drive about 350 feet, but zero accuracy. Generally about a 50 degree spread (25 degrees left or right, there's no consistency) from the tee which is no use to anyone. Accurately though I'm struggling to hit 280. I've watched all the tutorials and done all the drills and all the hours of field work and videoing myself so after 4 years playing I feel like I should be vastly better than I am. I expected to be driving 400+ (125m) accurately by now, which seems like a good intermediate level. So sometimes I leave the course in the worst mood. DG is something I need to do when I'm relaxed and happy. It is not a good way to calm down, for me at least. It's massively stress inducing.

Maybe you are trying way too hard to put more power behind it or overthinking your throw/form.

I know when I am playing ultimate or regular golf. When I do a pull in ultimate or drive in golf. If I try too much power, I totally shank the disc/ball. Because I am thinking about putting all my power behind it. Even happens when I try a regular throw and overthink it.

But if so regular pull with just enough power, I get good distance and get it to where I want it to go.

I just got to practice more, slowly build up more power behind it, without thinking and sacrificing accuracy.

Yeah, that's exactly it. But I think I'm figuring it out. Trying to put power into it makes you try to "wind up", leaning your torso back pre shot and then try to swing forward during the pull. It's just natural and instinctive. It's also wrong and bad. Causes too-high shots a lot and adds another dimension you have to get the timing right on, a dimension that's not actually helping. I've started trying to keep my torso upright or at least not moving (other than twist and lateral translation, which both come from the legs) during shots and I'm really noticing the improvement. It makes the power deliver much better from the legs and means the impulse comes more from rotation more. I hit 385ft with my old beat up fairway driver the other day, and I'm wondering now what I could do with an actual driver.

It hit me when I started messing around with 360 spin drives. My distance stayed the same but with what feels like so much less effort, and the reason is that it's all about the rotation and I wasn't trying to charge up by leaning back. So... I stopped!

I actually bought a cheap starter pack of discs on Amazon last year because there are courses all over around me and it looks like it could be fun. Never tried them yet... Anyone have tips on a resource to learn how to play? I know next to nothing.

If you're stressing about disc golf, use a regular frisbee that you are good at throwing and go play.

Rather than try to get a wedge shaped driver to fly a mile in a perfectly straight line. Just go play with whatever frisbee you enjoy playing catch with.

Discing down is the go for sure. Other than long holes, it's generally possible to make par with a putter. Putter + a mid like a buzzz can fill that gap, since a buzzz will go 280.

The problem is less the discs though, it's that as soon as I started caring about the score, I stopped having fun. In three years of trying, I never made par on my local beginner course. It's like there are some major psychological blocks there. And, I lost approximately $800 worth of discs at that course during the same time period. I've never met anyone who loses discs at my rate. Ball golf would literally be cheaper for me, I did the math.

I tried everything. Tried to stop caring about the score. Played the holes in a random/no order so I wouldn't track the score. Multidiscing. Took a break for months. Went putter-only for months. Just did field work - for months. Videoed myself and focussed hard on form, following all the good tutorials.

It's like World of Warcraft is for some folks. It long since stopped being fun and became a harmfully addictive grind that I kept doing purely because I wanted to hit par, just once, and I wanted to drive 400 ft, just once. Those were my goals from day one. Years later, no dice. Meantime I was watching people hit par on their first month. Literally everyone I played with rocketed ahead, without exception.

The key is not my physical skills, or discing down, or any of that really. The real learning from all this is that mental skills suck major arse, and that's also by far the hardest part of the game to fix. Maybe I just got unluckly near the start and it set some things up, but really I think it's brought out a destructive side of my personality I didn't know I had. That's been a major life learning in other areas, even if my game has never improved. So, on balance, I'm still glad I play.

Holy wow, sorry for the rant.

Went to league night last night. Second time in organized play and first night on a course that isn't specifically designed for beginners. Threw my Buzzz into the pond and couldn't find it. Went OB on about 5/19 holes (hole 20 was just removed by the city after someone got thwacked under a pavilion by an errant throw, the hole was a poor design anyways). Birdied the longest hole on the course with a throw I thought I had grip locked. Birdied another hole and got best score on it that night. Shot +18, which is one better than my +19 last week at the beginners course.

Think I'm hooked, and now I need to go and buy another Buzzz.

I can see what you are saying though V. I started to compare myself to the better players last night as I am hyper competitive. Instead, I focused on enjoying being outside, joking around with my card mates and working on my own game. Also sweating, since it was 107*F at tee off.

Nothing wrong with a bogie average. I still get those +18 rounds occasionally!

I've never actually thrown a buzz, we have a local manufacturer who is in all the big sports stores so most folks mostly just throw those including me: www.rpmdiscs.com

            But I really want one...
