i'm assuming the Perrin character story change was the "altered" to be "better" angle.
i'm liking it so far and the wife likes it, too...

The new Perrin angle definitely gave me pause. Did he lose his parents that night in the books? The Show’s incident felt like a much better reason for him to be a never ending bummer.

It seems like a left turn from who he was in the book and makes him a very different and kinda dumber person. He had a normal smith relationship like his dad or just a regular grumpy blacksmith who he wasn’t married to and who didn’t have something mysterious about her that makes her hide in the forge herself.

I think her angle is that she was a dark friend because they threatened her baby and she was really attacking him so he will have some redemption. Seems like an unneeded story line and again makes him much different than he was in the story.

I can’t complain I guess because I am hoping they change a lot of the story and here I am complaining at the first one I see.

also doesn’t Rands dad die in the book instead of just get left behind?

I’ve only watched 1.25 episodes yet. I hope they can keep the series going.

We can enjoy the series without thinking Robert Jordan was exactly a genius lol.

I sometimes get elements of wheel of time confused with name of the wind series as they both borrow a lot of elements from prior art and have traveling peoples and close to the land peoples both which enhance the main character.

          Still cool.

I am just gunna repeat myself that I’d be so pleased if they manage to get through the whole series. So many things I wanna see play out with enhancements

Yeah, what you say is exactly why I read the series. I started game of thrones and started the storm light archive and got tired of waiting for me material to come out. Following the Sanderson thread, I saw he worked on and finished the wheel of time series, and I didn’t really care about the minutia at that point, just glad to have an ending.

This is as good a place to end my lurking return as any. I've read the series start to finish at least a dozen times over my life (because I am a loser). Rand's father doesn't die in the attack he is injured but is healed by Moiraine. He makes various appearances throughout the series and is involved in the great finale. Anyway I've been mostly happy with the series so far but the diversity casting choices seem a bit jarring. The Two Rivers is supposed to be isolated and the arrival of an outside trader was an epic event so you'd figure most people would look alike which is why Rand stands out as a soulless ginger but instead the Two Rivers is as diverse as any metropolis. I know exactly why they did it but the choice seems forced given that Robert Jordan painted a diverse cast in the first place just not quite so much among the main cast which is again from an isolated remote village. Anyway a small nitpick among some other small nitpicks (the spotless clothes are another) but overall I am quite pleased with the series and hope it finds an audience.

I read the original series up until RJ's death. I haven't read the ones that were completed for him only because I haven't had much time for reading.
I've watched the first episode so far. The very first thing that struck me was that it really seems like the aged the characters (physically and where they are at in their lives) by a couple years. I certainly don't recall them drinking in taverns nor, being any any kind of romantic relationships. With Rand and Egwene in partcicular, in the first chapter of the book, it's made obvious that they like each other but, at the very least they are awkward around each other. IIRC, Matt was already playing around with girls by this point while just as likely to be pranking them. I swear Perrin was single and living with his Father (who died in the attack).

Perrin's father was killed by Padan Fain (I really need a life). There are a bunch of theories I have why they went with an older cast maybe they wanted to avoid the Y.A label or maybe they didn't want the actors to age faster in real life than they would in the slower pace of the series. In the end though I think it was probably just because you can make adult actors work more hours in a day than you could younger actors.

I think the show runners pre warned folks (though I have only heard about the comment from third parties) that they would be aging the kids up so you wouldn’t have to deal with teenagers leading armies into battle.

I don’t remember how long it took the kids to become the leaders they turned into, but it might just be that the show’s timeline gets there quicker?

Different times for different kids but their youth was a major part of the story. Not that it matters anyway because based on the reviews I'm seeing I don't believe we will see the series ever make it to the last book.

I read the first book when I was 11 nobody wanted to see this series happen as much as me and they've already greenlit season 2 so hopefully it finds an audience. I'm just not seeing any rave reviews for it like Game of Thrones probably because there has been a distinct lack of gratuitous nudity in it.

I'll be honest, I didn't know about this series. Some of my friends got excited when it was announced. Having zero knowing of this franchise I enjoyed the 3 episodes. Reminded me of a tried and true plot but with high magic (Dragon Age as an example). Don't know why people want to compare it to GOT, I love GOT but it is so brutal and anti-hero, this is more of a breath of fresh air. Knowing who the heroes are and settling down to invest time into watching them.

That said I'm now super interested in the books, and do hope this series is able to go to completion, because I like it for what it is.

I like it for what it is too.

I wouldn’t put wheel of time very high on your list of books to read. There are better books for your time.

Fantasy TV shows are hard to come by so I’d prefer to be all in with the series vs the books myself.

I watched the first 6 episodes and the trailer, and I just have to say they missed an opportunity to use wheel in the sky for the trailer (thought the rights might have been hard to acquire).

Honestly, I feel season 2 worked out much better than season 1. Can't quite put my finger on why yet.

I was just talking to my wife about this... in season 1 we "needed" extra taveren for the possibility there could be a female dragon reborn. this leads to disgruntled fans bashing the writing of season 1 (it was warranted). now that Rand is the dragon reborn, (who knew, right?) we have great source material that works (the books) and possibly the tv series writers don't want to repeat the disaster that was the last season of Game of Thrones.

I thought season 2 was much better than season 1 also. A couple key performances really lifted everything around them. Lanfear, new Mat, and I can’t remember the other one I had in mind… maybe Ishmael? Maybe Ingtar?

either way, there were a couple actors I was impressed with. I think the actress playing Egwene was in her element when in custody of the Seanchan

yeah, she was amazing. ishamael is very good, too.
i wasn't entirely happy with the end of season 2; the book was way better (falme).
like for example in the tv show, egwene is holding off ishamael by herself (really?)
and perrin runs up and puts his shield into her weave (really????) like that's gonna do anything.
i would've loved to see nynaeve go at ishamael and fight him to a standstill.
and then Rand just stabs ishamael, really!?! spoiler alert, forsaken really can't be killed...
