okay got players & volo guide for D&D beyond book out of three which would get next

might be able to get 2 of them so out of three books what next to get. i also want to get dm book so learn the rules better. also want to read up on race and class. so have good amount of race. what would be next best book for class to have this person coming from play 2ed forgotten realms and planescape with all races and class to pick from.

    Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes

    Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

I think Xanathar's Guide is more useful than Mordenkainen, but I have not read Tasha's. Lookup The Trove.net & you should be able to get a taste for the contents.

My son just got Tasha's last week. It adds a ton of class options and feats. He loves making characters and love that book.

I agree with Yellow. Xanathars, then Mordenkainen's

That said. If you don't have the DMG and you are the "book guy" for you group or are ever going to run the game. Grab that first.

Xanthers and Tashas this will basically catch you up with all of the options.

Honestly I wish Wizards of the Coast would just do a new player's handbook with all of the errata and include the options from these "new tomes" for people getting into the game. My daughter and her husband want to start playing again but getting the books to have all the options is costly. I have a DnD Beyond account and have shared all of this with them virtually so they do not have to buy to books but they really want to have the references in book format. Unfortunately Wizards of the Coast are keeping everything broken up and staggered releases to increase profits, I understand but but do not have to like their business plans. It does make Christmas shopping for them simple though

You have plenty to play with now and you really do not need all of the "expansions" to play and have fun. I personally do not see anything in particular in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes that really feels like a "must have" that is not covered somewhere else. One of the nice things about Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is it includes a lot of reprints of content from other sources so with the Player's Handbook, DM's Gude, Volo's, Xanther's and Tasha's pretty much everything is covered for optional rules and subclasses. This includes a lot of errata info from Unearthed Arcana. So if you are running the games you look pretty set once you have Tasha's for quite a while and then your players really only need the Player's handbook of their own and borrow yours.

I share your frustration there. But I'll take the slow bloat we have seen with 5e over the 5 books a year we used to see or them starting over with "6e". I really do wish that if you bought the physical book it came with a code for the content to be available to you digitally.

Going to get last two books with class so can read up and have. Dm book comes later. If you book shelf at house you see all rifts books and monthly mag i have way more then what D&D. And palladium books way worst then D&D come to that. want to have have class. Should for gone race for class instead. Also not sure why do not option like forgotten realms where have cleric that can do healing and cause damage. Or paladin that not good one but other than evil one.
