I'll dig in my old files and see if I've got any details. I saw one in the wild decades ago at a paintball shop. When I asked about buying it the owner told me he wouldn't sell one to an enemy. Apparently, the triggers on them were horrifically stiff, and they chopped paint regularly.

Never played with one, and that was the only one I've ever seen. This would be back around '92 or '93

I'm nowhere even close to as knowledgeable as some of the gurus we have here in the great hive mind of MCB. But I gotta say, in my 23 years in the game, I've never heard of the thing.

Vintage Rex com CMI LS 2000

The patent linked off the Vintage Rex listing shows it's damn near a screw-for-screw copy of an Equalizer.

With the only differences being a transverse regulator (that in all probability was even worse than the original Equalizer reg, if such a thing is even possible) and the drawing is missing a very important piece. The bolt has to have an inner piston that goes inside the "power tube"- like the center post of an Automag bolt.

The gun as shown in the drawing will simply blow the ball out the barrel, without actually cycling the bolt. It might actually fire a ball, but you'll get a ton of blowback up the feed neck as well. Very likely to the point where the last few balls in the feed neck could be shot up to the inside of the loader nearly as hard as the ball is being shot out the barrel.

The actual Equalizer wasn't all that good- if this thing was supposed to be a cheaper, not-as-well-built Equalizer knockoff, even if the bolt did work right, I could easily see that being a crappy gun only suited to hang on the wall of a museum.

They disappeared quickly because CMI was sued by the guy who made the Phoenix. More specifically, he sued cmi over the reg, which was patented. He also sued Sheridan over its “no hot shots” reg, the equalizer and the falcon, from which the equalizer and ls2000 were derived

it might all seem like patent nonsense, but the company that was contracted to make the equalizer, decided to make there own guns- the checkmate and falcon. The checkmate was a decent montneel clone. The falcon was a Phoenix clone, but without the rotating bolt.

nobody was interested in other montneel clone, but many companies loved the falcon.... and it’s reg. Anyway, Sheridan won the contract to make stuff. CMI just copied it, like all the CMI products

Er, a bit off there, unless I have the timeline wrong. The "guy" was Evan Scott. He developed what became the RG-1 inline reg (KC made the "NoHotShots") and what eventually became the Equalizer, and either sold them or more likely licensed them to Sheridan. Sheridan was concerned of a potential suit by AGD- despite AGD having no relevant patents that it would infringe- and so redesigned the internal, vertical valve that Scott designed, into the idiot external valve that they ended up with.

I don't know about him and CMI, but if they did try making the gun shown in the patent linked earlier, if he had licensed (and not sold) the design to Sheridan, then yes, that thing's a textbook example of patent infringement.

Somewhere around here, I actually have some low-res sorta-CAD drawings that Scott sent me, showing the original rocking trigger and vertical valve intended to go in the Equalizer. I've mentioned before how I've always wanted to build one "right"- better reg, vertical valve with more flow, proper 45 grip you can mount a real tank to...
