    Stock-Mounted Tanks

Every time I look on this site, I see something I didn't before, and gets the gears turning in my head.

How practical were the old stock-mounted tanks? In particular, on pump guns.

There was a Grey Ghost that sugarstump sold recently with this style set-up.

Did this phase out for a reason? Just not a good idea? With the common 13 CI tanks these days, I'm kind of surprised this hasn't made a come-back.

You can still get back bottle setups. On some markers. A lot of markers were setup that way back in the day because it was a simple design. They also played in shop goggles so you could get behind the marker still. Lots of Mag fed markers are designed this way to look a specific way.

Some people prefer Back bottle setups I can’t hit anything with them. With the way I aim I need to look down the outside edge of a marker and with a bottle in the way I feel like I’m hip firing. But I know people who are dead accurate with Back bottle setups so it’s just a preferred way of play.

Electo have the tank off the grip frame because they are using big bottles to push high volumes of paint. Having a big 80ci in your shoulder, in your line of sight would not be very good ergonomics for playing tight On an Xball field it also makes the marker long. That’s why you don’t see them on the speed ball field.

It's not exactly the same, but a few magfed guns use a 13ci-in-stock. I don't care for it since it bumps up against my mask, but some people like it, especially for the look. The stock mounted tanks worked well enough, basically the same as a drop forward, but with the stock against the shoulder vs. the tank.

I like super compact setups so I don't like them, but I'm also anti-stock so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I'm one of the last few to LOVE back bottle setup ...
The angle down on them is what I find perfect, use the tank as a "stock" with the but resting on the shoulder and (for me) the marker set at the perfect position, plenty of room for the mask and aiming but the gun/hopper doesn't sit half a mile above you.

THis is part of why I cannot hit the field without my Vector ... It's the perfect ergonomic (for me).

For pump, it feels more natural (again, to me) to have the support of gun in line with the pump travel axis.

Let me also say bba reach their full potential with right (or left) feed.

At the end of the day, i all comes to personal preference.
If you can find one to play with at a field is always a good way to try new/different things ...
Love my brass ... Love my SSR ... Hard choices ...

The way I aim using the outside edge of the marker I can’t use right or left feeds. It’s got to be center feed and I got to be able to get the marker up and in line with my outside eye. Otherwise I can’t hit anything. Only good thing is as long as it fits in that parameter which is the majority of markers they all aim the same to me. Capital Dave on the other hand is amazing with a back bottle setup. It’s definitely all what you are use to and preference.

Are you talking backbottle? Or Cali Style? Backbottle is fine with me, so long as i have a sight and a riser. But I LOVE Cali style. I run Cali on all of my pumps.

I'm taking about a stock mounted to a gun, then the bottle mounted to the stock, like the picture below (stolen from SugarStump's for sale ad)

Not sure what this is called.

Ok. Yeah. That's called Cali style. Doc makes a stock, and so does Lapco. Otherwise, you can sorta make your own with a drop forward and a duckbill asa, or pipe clamps, or something like that.

My preferred method of mounting a bottle on a Nelson based marker with bottom line being #2. I will use back bottle but only on a stack tube and still prefer a Cali or Bottom Line setup on those too.

Doc makes a P Stock you can add an ASA and tank to. Most people just use the tank as a stock and mount an ASA direct. But if you wanted to use a tiny tank and still get the length you need out of a stock it’s always an option.

I always thought this setup looked well thought out. Small Co2 bottle or even a 9ci/10ci tucked out of the way on the inside. It’s not hanging off the bottom and will keep any additional weight toward the back. I bet it handles well. Always thought it was a ingenious way of using those big old drops nobody uses much anymore. I probably would just remove the Vertical ASA and plug the valve on the side run it like that. He just ran it directly to the back of the valve threw the gaged port in the VSC valve.

Bottom picture is A Doc P Stock. He sells them in the dealer section. I have a few of his L stocks and products it’s all very nice quality stuff. https://docsshop.storenvy.com

(BTW I snagged these photos out of the phantom show off thread for reference they are not mine)

I thought so to it’s a cheap alternative. You couldn’t fit a large bottle on it like The one off the bottom but I thought it was smart thinking and keeps it tucked inside your outside arm at the same time still has the clearance for a mask. Not going to lie I may try this idea with a BBA valve I got in the parts bin on my spring feed phantom.

😋 This is ones is Doc's version. Note the round hole in the "P" section and slightly better curve of the shoulder portion.

So my idea was to take my Spartan with the 12-gram changer, and run a constant-air dummy in it. Then mount the L Stock to the grip (that I just bought off the BST area), with a 13/3000 mounted to the stock. On the tank would be a remote adapter, with a stainless line running from the dummy 12 gram to the remote adapter.

Here's a pic off Doc's site showing a similar set-up, minus the tank (and on a Phantom instead of my Spartan, but same idea). In Doc's write-up, he mentions the "california style constant air" by mounting the tank to the "arm" of the stock like I'm envisioning.

When I run the Phantom open class I mount the P-stock I got last Walzmas...thanks Carp! It's a nice setup and easy to shoulder. At one time I put it up to trade for an L or T stock but once I used it, I changed my mind. Bought a T-stock for the stock class setup instead.

-As the others have noted, the "underslung" tanks, mounted with a ring or clamp of some kind, was called "California Constant Air", or "California Style". Started, of course, back in the days when a "big" tank was one of the long 10-ouncers, and with a hand-knob "thermo" valve, you couldn't screw it in like a back-bottle. So they hung it underneath, in a style popularized in California.

This is ones is Doc's version. Note the round hole in the "P" section and slightly better curve of the shoulder portion.
-I've made both. The very first P-stocks I made back in the day were basically a copy of the Marksmann style stocks, as shown on BigRed's Phantom above. Except mine had a round hole in the "P" section, as I was hand-making them, rather than cutting the sections from extrusion. Later, I had blanks water-jetted, and they had a smaller trapezoidal hole, and then when I started remaking the P-stocks a year or two ago, I went back to the round holes.

There's also a bunch of one-off customs out there, that I've made-to-order over the years.

When I brought back the L-stocks, just before the Big MCB Crash, I was also working on a batch of Carter-style tank rings, which, when coupled with a modern (albeit a bit hard to find) 22ci HPA tank, does a great job in emulating the original 10-ounce 'California Style' setup.

However, on my manual equipment, those are very time-consuming to produce, and I'm still a long way from able to set that sort of thing up on a CNC.

Anyway, for those interested- who would I be if I didn't take this chance to plug my wares? - I have black P-stocks on hand, and unanodized L-stocks. I waited for a batch at an anno shop for almost a year, before I told them to piss off and send my stuff back. I have a new shop I'll be dealing with, but I'm not going to send anything out 'til after the first of the year.

And, if you want one of the Carter style tank rings, I'll be happy to make one, but they're kind of laborious and won't be cheap.

              Doc.

I have used similar setups and Ill say this. I can always get a similar feel by ditching the stock and finding the right asa to put the tank where I want it. You mileage may vary, but I don't find them more comfortable then a tank for a stock, and the extra weight isn't worth it. Again, just my opinion but the extra weight is something to think about.

Got my stock in tonight, thanks JeepDVLZ45

After its mounted, I don't think I will have room to mount the tank between the stock and the 12 gram changer. I have about 10" of clear space right now, but realisticly, that usable space is less as I need to get my thumb around the grip.

I could be wrong, but I think a 13/3000 + regulator + fill adapter (on/off ASA) will be too long.

ANS gear lists the OAL of the Ninja 13/3000 at 9-3/8" (with regulator) leaving no room for the on/off ASA.

You could always go with a 9ci or 10ci. I get 150 shots on a hot fill with a 9ci on my phantom shooting 280fps.

The 10ci seem to be sold out everywhere currently but you can still find them.
