    Rebuilding an old Bob Long Power Reg

    Looking for information on the inner workings of this older regulator.

    It was on my mag back in the 90s (when I thought a reg would do a better job of keeping liquid out than an expansion chamber). I'm pretty sure it was called a Bob Long "Power Reg" or something like that. Now in the HPA era, it is of course redundant on a mag and most recently saw use simply as an unnecessarily heavy foregrip. And all of my markers that need external HPRs already come with ones that are probably better (and are certainly lighter). But I just hate the thought of it being useless for want of some attention and maybe a few seals. I recently got it unstuck from the VASA into which it had been threaded for years and I was able to unscrew both the top section (the light grey with the ASA threads) and the velocity adjustment screw. Nothing appeared to fall out, and I'm not sure where to go from here as far as gutting this thing and replacing seals go. Does anyone have a manual or diagram of it, or simply recall how these were put together? Looking in the openings, I mostly just see solid brass. I'm hesitant to just insert a dowel and start smacking away with a mallet until I am sure that I won't break something.

    As a side note, I think the HPRs that came with some early 2000s ICD markers may have been based off of its design, as they appear to be rather similar. The 2000-2002 B2K regulators look nearly identical, except for an extended body tube screwed onto the bottom to compensate for the high placement of the VASA relative to the grip frame. If someone could confirm that these are the same internally, then I could at least use an old ICD exploded parts diagram for guidance.

    Second side note: Anyone else ever have one of these where the plug for the gauge port simply would not come out? Someone must have used Loctite from hell on mine.

    the air plug issue was a known problem. usually overtorqued and messes up the threads pretty good, reg metal is way too soft for the steel plug.

    it's been over a decade since i've been inside of one though. don't remember it being a big deal once the top section was removed.

      I just battled an 1/8” plug yesterday. Take a heat gun to it for 20 seconds or so, should come right out.

        Tried the heat gun. Also tried boiling the thing. Still won't budge. Might blowtorch the bastard next.

        ...or just leave the damned thing alone because slapping a gauge on it really isn't important.

        THANK YOU! This is precisely what I needed to know.

        Those black o-rings are probably sticky goo by now, explaining why nothing falls out when I unscrew the top or bottom. Seeing that there's nothing threaded in there and no snap rings or anything, I can be more confident in tapping it out with a dowel and a mallet. That 1/4" urethane doughnut reminds me of the bumper on an Autococker cocking rod.

        remove the top and bottom part and slam it on a soft surface or towel to remove the bottom piston, or top. then stick a skinny Allen key in the center and push out the other piston. These are valuable regulators for someone restoring a BL marker. The orings on mine are not original, I replaced them a year ago or so. The original were Urathane

        The original o-rings being urethane makes even more sense, as that is more prone to sticky gooeyness.

        If I am successful at restoration and do not find a use for it reasonably soon, then I'll probably offer it up on here so that it can complete someone's project. Either that, or use it as a Walzmas give away.

      Now the big question, is it worth putting this on a Trilogy Comp in place of the fixed pressure WGP reg, or should I just let that sleeping dog lie since I seem to be achieving sufficient velocity just using the IVG and the fixed reg? If I don't use it on the Trilogy, it'll probably go into the spares box for future use in getting one of my buddy's cheap blowbacks to behave itself at the chrono.

          These are super straight forward and work well. You can use ICD reg seats in them with no issues.

        if the trilogy work, dont change the reg, its not really worth it and they work fine with the stock reg.

        The MCB way for this one is: start a new cocker build from this cool vintage reg! Try to find a cool pre 2k body and build it
        Thats what I would do...


        or just sell it to me, I have a 96 vert feed bob long body blank being milled currently and could use this style of reg

          Lead me not into temptation. Despite having been an Automag guy since '95, part of me has a nostalgic desire for a 98 cocker.

          Story time: I have never played competitively, but dreamed about it as a teenager and was frustrated at the lack of tournaments near the little corner of the Gulf Coast where I grew up. Or at least, tournaments I was aware of. There weren't a lot of good internet sources for that sort of thing in the mid to late 90s; not to my knowledge anyway. But then in 1998 there was some amateur 5-man tournament in Atlanta that November, right around my birthday. I tried to put together a team, but couldn't muster enough guys who were willing to blow that much money to make the trip, and my dad wasn't keen on the idea of driving 5 hours with a bunch of teenage boys to begin with. So it was a no-go. But I remember the prize packages including the new 1998 redesigned Autocockers. I spent forever poring over at the ad/article/whatever in APG about that tourney and the pictures of those super cool looking cockers. And though it made me feel weirdly, slightly guilty as an Automag devotee, I daydreamed an awful lot about how awesome it would have been to win one of those 98 cockers.

          Maybe I'll have to start keeping my eyes open for period-correct late 90s cocker parts.
