Velocity issues with tracer and maverick

    Hello all,

im new to MCB. I apologize if this is lot the right place to post this.

I have a tracer and a Maverick, both are low velocity 220-240. I replaced springs, using phantom springs (which brought up velocity 20-40 fps).

im looking for help, trying to get these pumps up to 270-280.

    any suggestion?

    thank you

    -Nate

What is your air source? CO2 or HPA? CO2 is recommended but, an 850 psi output HPA tank should do the trick. What's the size of the paint you're using? Are you having a lot of rollouts?

I was using co2 - I will try compressed air. Not sure of paint caliber. I am using electrical tape on stock barrel as detent. And I have a super staunchy tracer to AC barrel adapter that is .675 (this works great as a detent).

Is a standard 13 ci 3000 psi tank - output the right psi?

      thanks

Possibly. The two numbers you mentioned, 13ci, gives the internal volume of the tank and 3000psi is the maximum fill pressure. Those numbers don't give us the factor we're interested in- the output pressure of the regulator. However, if your tank doesn't say otherwise it's often safe to assume the tank's regulator is set for the normal/high ~output pressure. I'm not aware of any 13ci tanks being sold with low output regs.

You said you tried going to a heavier valve spring but have you tried going to a weaker valve spring?

you can order an immortal air 13/3K in pressures ranging from 425-850psi FYI

I think William the 3rd on here had a adjustable bolt for sale. It should really help.

Yeah, if you don't have adjustable bolts, let me know. I've got one, and can probably find another.
          I can haz feedback?
If I owe you feedback, just remind me, as I sometimes forget.

Adjustable bolts only throttle output, the opposite of his issue. HPA velocities will be even lower.

A bone stock Trracer on CO2 should shoot 270-280 in normal temps. If he’s not getting that something is wrong. The hammer is binding or there’s Teflon tape in a line or something is up with the springs.

Adjustable bolts on the Trracer/Maverick adjust spring tension on the hammer/striker. The only traditional Nelson valved pump that immediately pops in my head that adjust velocity as you describe is the SL-68 II, though I'm sure there are others.

What’s your bolt tip oring look like?

Most 3k tanks output 800psi there are a few exceptions but most of the 3k tank regs come factory preset to around 800psi. However if your having velocity issue on CO2 they will only be exacerbated on HPA.

I would pull it apart check for something binding check the cup seal is tight lightly oil and see if that fixes your issue. Also check that your bolt tip oring is sealing on your breach properly. It should slide easily but seal. If it’s missing or shot This could be robbing you of the velocity your looking for. Especially when you factor in a large bore barrel and small paint.

Make sure it’s all moving freely and not binding up. May have to go with a stiffer spring to get the velocity you want. But you should be able to get the velocity your looking for with the stock bits working properly.

I will take these suggestions and post my findings.

              thanks everyone

                I am using co2.

I replaced o-ring on bolt and cleaned off
some small pieces of rust on hammer.

velocity is very low and sounds like it leaks after a 5 shots (the leak part is a new development).

through deduction, I think something is wrong with valve.

                I’ve included some images

                thanks

I noticed a gap inside of valve is that suppose to be there ?

That is definitely not normally there. Are you able to tighten it up? That should at least take care of the new leak and possibly give you the extra FPS.

                  Update:
tightening that piece made all the difference.

tracer is now at 265 with stock parts

Maverick is now at 311 with a red phantom spring

                  thanks everyone !

I feel like an idiot for not trying that sooner; I was fixated on the springs.

So your cup seal was the issue.

When it comes to these kinds of guns “return to stock configuration” is usually the fix.
