    Tippman Carbine Freak ?

Just curious as to what people would use or use on a Tippman Carbine for a freak system. Are there freak barrels that fit that front shroud ? Do people open up the front to accept a freak back ?

I always just use a Dremel with the sanding drum attachment to open up the inside of the shroud.

I freak bored a barrel but the insert gets pulled out by the bolt so not a viable option.

I'd use an A5 back which has a bit of space between the insert and bolt and cut the shroud

I use an A5 threaded Freak back on my bolt pump and it has plenty of room in the pump handle. If you want to trial it to see if it fits you're welcome to do so man

I personally don’t think it’s worth the effort, just get a decent barrel like a lapco or a dye and enjoy. There’s just no benefit in an open bolt blowback, espy one where the bolt enters the barrel.

Believe it or not....I kind of agree with this. I only really did it with mine so the barrel tip matched. From a performance perspective, it doesn't get better then a CP 0.685 on a Tippmann.

I was thinking that but wanted to see what the crew would say on barrel opinions for these.

I have to disagree. In theory, with quality paint, sure, but we don't always get to choose the good paint.

A recent day of play for me I had an old Pro-Carbine and my magfed converted A5. The carbine had a vintage appropriate J&J Stainless, the A5 a Freak with 10" tip. The paint was hard, tiny, really thick filled, and a little tacky to the touch. When fired the carbine had a very noticeable downward hook, like the detent was imparting a front spin when you fired. Or maybe the transition from breach to barrel, hard to say. The A5 shot acceptably straight. Not the best, but acceptable. The carbine was almost useless. Felt like the tighter bore I was able to achieve with the Freak was enough to cancel out any detent induced spin. Admittedly I didn't have time for a proper scientific test, or even a chance to swap barrels between the two (honestly, the A5 was running so good that day, and I was having such a blast using magfed, I didn't want to give it up), but this was one of those days which makes me want to have a Freak back for every gun I bring to the field.

My money is on the specific barrel causing the problem. Detent induced spin is really not a thing. It’s hard for me to imagine the bolt/spring/hammer weight putting spin on the paintball as the ball is past the detent when the gas releases. Maybe I dunno

Just confirming chappy, my field is sub 0.675 paint only. I have run some absolute dog shit small paint though a CP barrel and had zero issues with the carbine. I'd be willing to bet that the breach & bolt combo is the issue. Small paint likes to clip, A LOT. To the point where you get a barrel break fast and then are just throwing sloppy half capsules everywhere for the rest of the day.

This is the real problem. Also why the flatline can cause problems. The o ring on the bolt can hit the flatline and cause velocity problems because that interaction stops the hammer from fully opening the valve

Tippmanns have also been known to have problems with barrel kits because the breaches are huge to accommodate any crappy or swollen paint that an ignorant new player can put in it. If you then put a small insert barrel kit on that it can cause quite a step that the paint has to hit and climb up to get into the barrel.
