Does any shop still do an Aurora finish?

So I have a nice project body and guts. It needs a knockout finish.

Anyone doing an Aurora type finish?

As far as I know, the only ones I have seen have been very limited runs done by PbGateway. They had a Phantom and some cockers done. But one off jobs, no. There are HORROR stories of guys who tried to get it done through car parts companies, sending overseas, etc. Its a very risky and non-tolerant process. Like trying to forge swords with lava as your heat source. In almost every case the tolerances go completely off the rails and your gun might end up as a VERY expensive paperweight.

I personally love the finish. Can't ever justify the cost of the Nexus cockers that have it ($5k+), but I do love it. Getting a sick anodizing job is likely your best bet, reach out to Caustic Customs or Aesthetic Anodizing and I'm sure you could get something amazing done.

It is funny you ask I just was looking into getting some done in a similar finish and found out the problems and price
First all the parts had to be chrome than there was a issue with timing and the minimum price was 500.00
[two_third] [/two_third] [one_third_last] PVD Black Rainbow The PVD process can provide multiple deposited layers on various substrate materials in one step. Deposition steps include metal layers, metal nitrides and in some cases metal carbon nitrides or oxides. Outside the functional benefits associated with multi layer coatings we have the opportunity to create unique colors that can set your product apart from the competition. The oxide layer or interference color is applied over the PVD Diamond Black coating creating a rainbow effect on the surface of the parts. Part geometry and position in the PVD chamber will either increase or reduce the intensity of the rainbow color so no two parts are identical.[/one_third_last]

I'd love to know more about how this process is done. Non-tolerant process would suggest to me that the coating/plating doesn't apply uniformly? Is the finish an anodize or is it a metal plating?

Look up vapor deposition coatings. Quite a bit of info there.

Yes. But.... It's very expensive, long turn around time, and high failure rate.

Neostar I think is the only one who's done paintball parts recently.

I think forging swords in lava is better idea. Whatever lava temperature is it is SURE to make the item only destroyable in the same exact lava pit (if you simultaneously imbue it with adequate malice)

              Best of luck!

It would be easier if the part is made of steel

Do you remember the $10k Phantom? Just to give you an idea on price to get parts done. When I looked into it one of the few that offers the process said it would be $8k upfront and couldn’t guarantee the parts would not be scrap when he was done. Knowing this it’s not a process I would ever want done. Want the look send it out for a real nice Ano you can get 90% of the look without the scrap parts and 1/4 the price. I think caustic customs did a really nice Aurora look marker a few years ago.

You could just spray paint it rainbow. 1 of 1 custom paint job, thats always a huge value adder XD

On a related note to both this and the discussion,

Rust-oleum makes a "color shift" paint that will change colors depending on the angle of light hitting it. It's expensive, $25 a can range but turns out really nice if you have the patience to do it right

I thought this was the place Eclipse used back in the day, and they appear to still be around.

Yeah that’s one of them. If I remember correctly I believe it’s a coating they run high voltage threw that’s what gives it the effect. To little it dose nothing, to much it melts the part. Failure rate was 50/50 at the time.

Owner of AG Paintball won this. It was plated by someone else. It’s perfect to. Ballsy if you think about how much theses are worth without the finish work. Probably my favorite one I have seen done.

I remember back when ChromaFlair was about $1000 for a can of acrylic paint, typically used on high end cars. Now you can get "colorshift" at Homedepot for $25 a can, or craft stores carry similar stuff for $10 for a small bottle. None work nearly as well as ChromaFlair, and to be honest, I'm not sure how well a paintjob will hold up on a paintgun.

Seems like the kind of thing that would wear off and look terrible after a while, then you would have the challedge of removing all the acrylics
