    Tippmann 98 rental questions

    To guys who have seen or used or worked with rental 98's, what are wear points?

    Do sears or hammers last longer? How common was it to replace either?

    I mean I know from experience usually the ball detent has needs, and ya gota watch out for the stupid little hopper elbow latch spring but what else?

    I'm kinda prepping up a handful of tippmann's for some noob style ball and piecing together a plan and where even to play.

    On a side note - its depressing how hard it is to find C02. Wall mart used to have pre-filled 20oz cylinders but I don't think they carry them anymore, and jerkwads like dicks sporting goods don't sell any "fire arms" anymore. The person I called on the phone called paintball firearms while explaining they don't carry any firearms stuff. I hope they go out of business, just for bumming me out!

    Wal mart had some BB guns still but no paintball stuff near me but its a bad walmart anyways.

    Some of your local bars and restaurants likely still use CO2 for their taps and soda guns. You could ask them where they get it. Not sure if that will help or not but it's an idea.

      I'm not worried about getting industrial C02 just bummed that paintball c02 is so deeply extinct. Those 90gram single use things sold in pairs seems to be what is left for the cheapo-paintballer.

      I'm going to be filling my own c02 for this venture.

      Sorry I provided all the tools needed to derail my own thread asking about high mileage tippmann 98 experiences. This was all triggered by the fact that the original type tippmann sear is no longer being made. Sears were a wear item on my piranhas but tippmanns tended to do a bit better with the sear lifespan but I want to see what others have been through.

      Also on another note - the new sears look like cast (MIM) units, how do they hold up compared to the old stuff? Maybe the new tippmann 98 china varients aren't so bad?

        In my experience with the 98 platform, the sears tend to round out before I see any difference in the hammer. Even then I've never seen a sear so rounded out that it no longer functions. An issue that I do see lately are guns that sit for a while will have the valve orings turn to goo.

        For your purposes, I'd recommend a BT4 over an actual 98. Same guts with fewer parts and easier stripping (separate grip frame with removable trigger pack, rail mounted feedneck so no having to deal with the feed latch, and best of all, a pre-installed c clip instead of the pos valve retaining ring. It does have a few less upgrades available for it, but again for your purposes, I don't think that's too much of an issue.

        As for CO2, your best bet is probably to just get a cheap aluminum tank and call it a day. If you're really set on CO2, a bulk tank from a gas supplier might be your best option.

          I appreciate the comment on the BT4. I considered them but they just remind me of the new era stuff that I hate so I decided to go with regular 98's because they make me happy despite having their own set of drawbacks. The BT4 does look totally solid though.

          The c02 is the same thing, I just like it and for this little project I am going to get c02 going. Its easier for me to get scuba tanks and cheap HPA tanks especially since I will be filling them myself and can consider how important hydro date is for myself, but I think I would be happier with legit in spec many shots per tank c02.

          I can fill a handful of c02 tanks at home and with a tippmann these guys won't need to refill all day. Plus as you get more and more tired the tank gets lighter its a bonus :P

              Toestr hits all the right notes. I really dislike the feedneck retention system on 98s. I hate having loose feednecks. The BT4’s sliding clamp is much nicer. Having to deal with the annoying trigger springs on a 98 is unpleasant as well. It’s much easier and faster to work on a BT4 than a 98.

                You put an O ring under the m98 feedneck thingie and it give it proper tension. Probably on a high use gun the feedneck will crack under that tension eventually.

                When you say hammers mushroom, is it at the sear spot or where it hits the valve pin/

                When you say bodies mushroom, where?

                I hear you guys about the BT4. My local rental guy was all about the piranhas because they are so much easier to service than tippmann 98's. Lucky for me this is not a high volume situation if I get these guys out once I will be happy and I'll probably be able to convince them all to buy CCM pumps or phantom stock guns after that.

                  maybe a weird way to address sear wear, but you could install light valve springs in all of them so you can use lighter mainsprings.

                  I expect that would reduce wear on the sear/hammer interface.

                    I automatically replace the valve springs with super weak ones and throw the weakest madman main spring in all my 98s. Reduces kick substaintially when coupled with a polishing and home brewed RVAs. Its also wayyyy softer on paint. My 98s will pinch defy instead of chopping it.

                    Myrkul yep, same experience here. There is a point where the trigger gets kind of mushy, something I don't like much. But I agree, big difference.

                    I run the weakest spring (and a weak valve spring) in my franken-98 and get playable velocities.

                    Oh if the triggers start getting too mushy for my taste I swap out the trigger springs quite a bit too. The old madman kits came with a red (stronger) and a blue (weaker) extension style sear spring. Newer style compression sear springs can be replaced as well....no idea where I get those though. I just dig through my spring box and trial and error into one that works reliably and is to my taste. The trigger return itself can either be pulled completely or replaced with a crazy weak clicky pen spring. In your case you might want to go the opposite ditrection and put something stronger in there, or just a stronger sear spring. That should clear up the mush.

                    Final note, you can swap out the top two trigger pins with chopped down spyder pins to clean up a little slack. I did this to save money on my Pile of Poo build and it actually resulted in the snappiest 98 trigger I have ever felt. Its absolutely fantastic. be sure to polish the receiver halves where the trigger makes contact as well!

                  Someone on here posted they used to take dry ice and drop it int he tank while it was on a scale. Measure for the proper tank capacity and you're good to roll. There's probably a little more to it but it's pretty feasible if you are down with taking your tank valve off to do this.

                  Either that or get on the Dunham's equivalent to a McDonald's ice cream machine incompetence. That's the most retail way of getting top offs.

                    Wherever they meet, remember it's cast, crap metal so with enough taking apart, putting together and vibration in between the metal can start moving over time.

                    I had a buddy that this happened to on a a5, he took it apart and put it together so many times that eventually the metal in the breach created a burr and was chopping about every 4th paintball. Took him forever to figure out out because it's not something you typically look for.

                    I've seen binding of the sear/trigger, I have a rental right now that has a broken cocking pin. Losing parts is more common

                    Replace all the retention rings in the valves with c clips, it will make life much easier in the long run

                      I've never even taken a valve apart. C clips the correct size available at basic hardware store? Thanks for pro tip.

                      ChoSanJuan about c02 fills, good fields would have jammed your tank into regular ice before filling it. Places like sports stores (if they were good) would fill then purge the tank wasting valuable c02 to cool the tank to let it get a full fill.

                        1/2" c clip is what you want.

                          All basically the same other than an optional egrip and add-ons. Main internals all identical. BT Assaults had barrels and carry handles, iron horse had maybe an apex but a barrel with crap stuck on it, a bipod. Deltas has a top rail kit, stock and option for their cyclone style force fed hopper, the rip clip
