Never used one. Supposed to be quicker to maintain. They didn’t seem to stick around very long.

ChoSanJuan about c02 fills, good fields would have jammed your tank into regular ice before filling it. Places like sports stores (if they were good) would fill then purge the tank wasting valuable c02 to cool the tank to let it get a full fill.
Oddly, my experience was always the opposite.

Co2 is not expensive, when done in bulk. we used to pay $20 per 100lb tank refill, which is good for about 125 7oz tanks. No large field is EVER going to use buckets of ice. Thats just crazy. Some sundays I'd be filling hundreds of tanks. I could fill a tank in about 30 seconds, chill, vent, fill, repeat.

I know co2 is more expensive now, but logistically, the chill/fill method is still best. I've also worked some fields that had either gravity filling, or co2 pumps. Those do not need chilling, but have there own issues. (gravity feed might have upside tanks! co2 pumps are very expensive, etc).

The only places that I've seen people use buckets of ice was at small sporting goods stores that only had small 25lb tanks... probobly paid too much to fill, and wanted to get every possible drop out of them, and I don't blame them. and the big sporting good stores? those were the worst. No chill, no ice... just an underfilled and overpriced tank. grrrrr

Its kinda irritating for me, as most of my guns can only run co2 and lots of local fields do not fill co2 anymore....

I have two 5 lbs CO2 tanks that I use to fill my own and the local supplier wants $40 each to fill!

I wish I had a better source for it.

My statement about "Good" fields I guess is probably inaccurate - the field that I used to like that was ALL c02 and didn't even offer HPA iced their tanks and the tanks of customers and had a pretty good flow going. But he was a real penny pincher and probably knew someone with an ice machine or something.

I am trying to set up my guns for c02 right now because while my guns don't HAVE to have it, I still like it. So instead of carrying a scuba around like I used to do to run HPA, I will start filling my own c02 tanks.

The BT slice has been ok in my experience. You need a hammer and punch to get the hammer and drive spring out, so that's a little annoying, but it's all good if you just need to clean out a chop. I've heard stories of the pushpin holes ovaling out, and that causing issues with cycling. Never seen it in the couple my local field has had for a few years. What I have seen is the pushpins get bent, and then be a bitch to get back in. The slice also has fewer upgrade options compared to a standard BT.

For "outlaw" rec ball CO2 makes a ton of sense. Since you're not at a field with a fill station, having a propellant that "goes a long way" is very valuable. You and your motley crew can pretty much play all day on full 20 oz tanks.

Its still most cost effective to do c02 that way, but its closing in on costs of doing outlaw style HPA.

          But yep.

Plus theres some guns where c02 is just better and since fields aren't filling it it makes sense to be able to take care of yourself. Theres enough industrial suppliers around me.

It really depends on the age of the guns. I maintained a fleet of 98s purchased new from Tippmann in 2011, and most if not all of them still have the original parts. Nine out of ten times a rental fails, it just needs to be cleaned. On rare occasions the valve o-rings need to be replaced. And ball latches, of course. It should be noted that this fleet was run exclusively on compressed air.

For a couple years, I maintained a fleet of guns purchased in maybe 2017. They were not being used any more than the previous fleet, but I was replacing hammers every 3 months. I replaced sears on occasion, and valves had to be rebuilt regularly. These were run on C02, which certainly explains some of it but not the hammers. Not when the other fleet had lasted almost 10 years on their original hammers.

Point is, Try to get older 98s. Pre platinum if possible. They'll be much more reliable.

              Here's an unpopular opinion

The jt tac 5 is a better design than the 98c

You can swap it between left right or center feed, all the guts come out the back (no clamshell) and you can get a version with a built in stock

The tac 5 definitely looks better on paper. From what I remember of the couple I've held, the construction wasn't the most confidence inspiring, and it looks kind of cartoony (which I can get past.

Yeah I will say I didn't own them for very long and didn't take them to a field or anything but they were so much better to work on it was crazy

Cunha- are you running co2 or HPA for these? Do you have the markers yet or still waiting to buy?

Just worked on a tac 5 a few weeks ago and it flat out refused to Chrono above 200 regardless of anything. Gun was an absolute pile despite some of its nicer features.

I already have two 98s and I’ve had a few before. I just never ran a rental fleet which is like the ultimate durability challenge. I’m surprised any field actually used 98s because they are so slow to service versus a piranha and so easy to drop little parts. But despite junk serviceability vs piranhas which really rain surpreme for field stripping I think the tippmanns just work better.

I plan on using co2 probably just because I’m going to get self service setup and everywhere else I go already has HPA but most don’t have co2

Rental 98 Cs I have worked on a Ton and kept fleets going, ASAs getting crossed and Detents . Newer 98s Valves and sears and it seems like even the clam shells wear out at the sear pins after awhile...

Before the store I worked at got the fleet of 98s in '11 like I mentioned earlier, we had Piranha GTi's. They are easier to work on (obviously) but we had to work on them so much more that it wasn't worth it.

Well I was actually going to recommend you look into the azodin kaos, even at retail prices you are looking at being able to get 2 for the price of 1 98, the only size o ring you need is a 015 tank ring, they break down basically identically to a piranha but are typically built better, double trigger stock and because it's a stbb you get a shorter profile to help with the short arms folk of the world which is your typical birthday parties.

If I were looking to put together a rental fleet, they would be very high on my list of possible markers

Do what my local field does and get the players a 2 pod pack with pods as part of the standard rental, they are super happy they can bring more paint onto the field and you sell a lot more paint because they go through it faster
