6 things that will let you know your Spyder is very old.

Here are six things that tell you your Spyder is a very old one. I'll start left to right, top to bottom.

    1. The barrel looks like the one in the picture. It has the two cuts about an inch in from the tip. This barrel predates the crown point.

    2. There is a choker screw in the driver side of the body.

    3. The sight rail is longer than ones on other Spyders. Picture for reference.

    4. The trigger frame too is longer. It nearly touches the air fitting. Why do Lapco VA's have that weird notch on the top end? This is why.

    5. The insert inside the grip frame is metal, not plastic. Picture for reference.

    6. Lastly, the box your Spyder came in from the factory is missing the black rectangle at the end of the fourth bullet point. Now you know what's been blacked out on all the other boxes you've seen.

If you should find your Spyder has all six of these features then consider yourself among the owners of the oldest Spyders out there.

There were a few other things that do date an original Spyder however I've left them out as these were features carried through some years. These being the larger feedneck, the longer detent, slotless cocking knob, and the thinner trigger with shoe.

Nice cheat sheet. I always wonder when I see one pop up for sale.

One more thing. The flared out feedneck on the powerfeed. Takes 1" elbows, not the 7/8" elbows used by later spyders.

Doh! you're right. Thought that was part of your signature and my eyes skipped right past it.

You're right. It does look like a signature. I'll add some spacing to it.

Does "old" mean 80's or 90's? I'm not up to snuff on the Spyder timeline... I started playing in the early 00's and Spyders seemed to have been around forever already at that point but I really didn't pay a lot of attention to them back then.

Great history post, too... MCB'ers are always full of niche knowledge that can't be found anywhere else, it seems.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

Early middle 90's Jordan. Mine (the one pictured) was purchased on the front end of 1995.

i suppose you could add the brass lining in the barrel on the OG spyders.

Wonder how long the choke screw versions were made. I've never actually seen one in person and my understanding is that the vast majority of 1st-generation Spyders were manufactured after that feature was deleted.

The revised barrel with the AGD-style "crown point" muzzle brake was also brass-lined.
