    Working Thumper's unite

So I don't know how many here have working Metadyne Thumper's, post up if you have one. If you do great! If you had to adjust anything on the thumper (bypass the piston reg, add custom piston, retool the piston area, etc) please post info as well.

The thumper is a lost uncut gem that always had potential.

For me, I found my thumper only works flawlessly off HPA. Played a magical 3 hours straight that way the other weekend. Was so happy I couldn't stop playing with the marker. After a jinx.

(At first I was playing on CO2 12ies when I was jinxed at the beginning of the day; when chrono tests with the thumper worked fine 10min before first game. Walk out to the field, first game and another pump player said the magic words, "is that a working thumper!" Just before game start on field, and pump, click...nothing)
which led me to finding if I use 12g air supply it lasts 15 to 30 shots, or 30mins under CO2 pressure. Then I have to give it a 1 hour o-ring cool down to subdue the swelling from CO2.

Speculation...This could be the reason the pistons were bending so frequently, the o-rings swell off CO2 around the middle of piston area. When the piston resets for the next shot a piece of the o-ring catches the internal airway hole and is pushed out of its groove jamming or bending the piston on the next shot.

    Any thoughts?

Thumper is later version aluminum piston, from factory and I will now run only HPA through the marker until it becomes a true paperweight.

I have mine running on 12grams. I run mine with a WGP reg. threaded for a CCI bucket. The WGP reg is set to just under 300 psi and I use the internal reg for velocity adjustments. I don't know what version piston i have but it looks very similar to yours. Its a threaded aluminum piston with a metal stem. I run a softer piston spring. It still has the aluminum hammer, so i put a plastic button on Clippard valve stem to keep it from getting bent and gouging out the hammer. I also modified the shape of the hammer. I can't seem to find my pictures of the internals. I will get some pictures of the internals next time i dig it out.

I have 3 working. I use co2 only. But have 4 oz tanks with myth regs on top set to 450psi. 12 grams work great just dont leave the gun gassed up between games or the internal reg locks up.

I have a small pile of Thumpers and a Phoenix, I've been holding off on posting details of the Phoenix in hopes of reaching Brian first.

One of my Thumpers is notable for having what is supposedly every possible upgrade, including a redesigned breech. That one I can get some pictures of for reference.

          I have one I got non-working in a trade ... It's running great now
It's running on 12g with the original reg
I have the stock class feed and the open class adapter as well as both paddles ...

I would love to get my hand on a phoenix ...

Nice hearing all the different solves that come up. Which leads to more questions.

              1) what is the ideal working reg pressure you would send through the marker for HPA and CO2?

              2) While using your working thumper, do you find it freezes up on you during your day of play on CO2 at all? If so how many times?
(Understanding that leaving CO2 pressurized in the thumper for extended amounts of time=bricked thumper for an extended amount of time)

              3) Not to dive into the Phoenix but is the workings of phoenix similar to thumper? Just beef'd up? Don't want to dive into that.

              4) How much fun is it to play with!? And watch people's face melt when you pump it?
Because I have picked up a few people's jaw off the floor.

Thank you all for responding, as I hope a working Thumper thread will help others get theirs up and running with some info on what works currently.

The Thumper is actually my favorite marker, kills me that it isn't consistent.

I run mine on 12 grams, the last time I used it I had to replace orings between every game. If I mess with it again I'll probably get a urethane oring kit.

Phoenix is similar, one difference is the hammer cocks during the forward stroke of the pump instead of the return. It is no longer sensitive to the angle the marker is being held. The hammer does still strike the valve at an angle though, which I would have expected to get refactored.

                  1)
no idea, I never measured it ...

                  2)
It doesn't freeze on me ... I make sure to not let liquid get to the gun.

                  3)
                  I'm curious too

                  4)
I'm always suprized how many people know what it is ...
I get more blank look with the ATS ...
That being said, most of them never seen one ... It always fun when they ask you "pump" it and they don't believe you 😁

Over all it's a great shooter and lots of fun to use, bit it is a prototype, they all are ...

Mine seems to run well but I keep having an issue with the VA turning on me during play when using a 12 gram bucket. I need to break it down to see what version I have and to fix that problem before the next time I roll out.

I was using it with no external reg and it worked fine but I will be putting an inline reg to keep it from killing itself in the future.

So I have a very early Thumper (M7-00041). It's never been gassed up.

What things need to be changed on it?

Not much to do, just a light lubing of vaseline or super lube if your tearing into it.
Make sure not to over do it and go easy inserting the reg and main piston. Air passages are sometimes sharp enough to knick an oring.
Check your hammer as it's probly aluminum, they wear a groove causing issues.
If you have to tear it down, check on main piston for straightness, the small (1/4" diameter) shafts bend at the oring groove.
Run an external reg if you can. start at 300psi and work your way up to velocity. Internal reg can be screwed all the way in to bypass it, if running an external reg.

It warms my heart that after everything that went down, there are still some guys on MCB trying to keep these guns working and actually play with em
