RTR Gargoyle Under Cocking Kit (Review)

So I got my hands on an original RTR Gargoyle Under Cocking kit and it came in today. I didn’t even know these existed until recently there is not much info on them. It’s got dual guide rods just like the the standard Gargoyle handle. Pump mounting plate it’s a bit thicker then the CCI one, but similar in design (it keys into the frame). Handle is sold aluminum it’s got some weight to it. It feels really smooth and will be nice trying out different barrels on my gargoyle. Might even try it on my Phantom with the slide frame I snagged from RTR on the last drop. Can’t wait to try this thing out. Click image for larger version

The handle is removable from the "key" that all the pump and guide rods go into. This was so that if you wanted you could make your own custom pump handle for it.

Was this before or after the CCI undercocker?

After. The CCI kit is much older, originally made by CCI and marketed and sold under... Wevo I believe? Wevo disappeared and CCI still had some in stock so he just took over and put them under his brand.

Yup, original was for Wevo but built by CCI.

Do you need a longer pem stud for this or does it mount up stock?

Really? The original ones came with a mounting screw I thought it was longer than the stock one. Maybe that was a change made after the first 20? I know he did make some minor changes after that first batch of 20 went out.

You don't need to change the PEM stud (or threaded insert if someone is running on a Phantom) but you may need a different length screw depending on which one you've got. If you don't have the right length reach out to me and we'll figure it out

It needs a longer front mount Stud on mine at least. Needs to be about a 1/4” longer. I think even on a Phantom you will need a longer screw. The mount plate is thick. May attempt a Phargoyle after I play around with it on the Gargoyle.

So I’m going to need one of these that are about 1/4” longer then the stock one to mount this. I’m going to check McMasterCar see if I can source one. Before I turn down a bugle head. Then the stock speed wheel will spin right on.

EDIT: PEM Stud it’s called for anyone is sourcing replacement parts.

Ok so strike two I’m going to need a lower profile nut of some sort to clear the Vert ASA the stock one is a bit to fat. Longer stud will work and provides enough clearance but the speed wheel is a lil to chunky (like me) to fit. Going to Look tonight to see if I can find something on mc master carr. I need a thinner 8-32 nut preferably one of the toolless type.

edit: I found a nice stainless one but I will have to turn it down on my lathe to work. Im thinking I can match it to the dimensions of the step in the pump plate if I want to get super fancy. I’m going to keep looking and see if I can find something off the shelf that will work tho.

Found one I just need to shorten up the collar. Much easier to modify. I got a few just in case I mess one up or lose one. Stay tuned... lol getting there.

Sooooo any chance the handle can be made to fit a duel rod guide from CCI?

Could you just have a modified "key" section of the handle or do you need a whole new handle?

Is this because you don't have the RTR mounting bracket?

Stilgar has the mounting bracket Nish. The issue is how the Gargoyle mounts from the top down and it uses a nut to hold the front half of the body. The Longer front mount screw that I have creates clearance issues on that mounting nut at the area ware the VSC top half bolts to the trigger frame. I ended up putting it on my Garg framed Phantom because the phantom mounts from the bottom up. If we were to source a thinner mounting nut it would work fine. Im assuming the original kit came this way and the nut was lost at some point.

It won’t mount to a dual rod plate the design is completely different. The Gargoyle dual rods are above and are guided and keyed into the gargoyle frame. The CCI plate has them below and they slide into the handle. The Gargoyle plate only had one larger guide rod similar to the older style CCI under cocking kits.
