Makin' 'Cocker barrels like they did in the Fifties!

Not many people know that paintball has been around for a very long time, and that the Autococker dates back to around WW1. That's why almost all the guns on the market today use 'Cocker barrels.

Anyway, it's fun looking through some of the historical archives, and seeing how people made some of our gear back in the day. Hand-rolling paintballs during the Revolutionary War, forging regulators from wrought iron in 1855, working in the CO2 mines at the turn of the century, seeing Glenn Palmer teaching people how to solder brass just before the Battle of Verdun...

Here's a quick video I ran across, showing how they made parts of a 'Cocker barrel just before WW2.

Who needs CNC? I knap parts for you fellows out of flint! With rocks! In A Cave!

Never seen something turned like that before. I'm very used to "in line or slightly below center axis"

Man, I really need to get my lathe in working order just to I can mess around with stuff! I've started to collection random (usually Proto) barrels for practicing on. My dream is to be able to Freak bore things.... but right now I'd settle for just getting the machine alive.

Very nice. I've always enjoyed your barrels.

Didn't we just use scaled up versions of this old cocker tech to make the barrels for the South Dakota and Iowa class BB's?

-This is more of a "shaving" style cut than conventional single-pointing. It's a form tool, similar to what you see Clickspring using a lot, but as it applies the cut tangentially, it reduces the chipload.

Docs been drinking the lathe coolant again hasn't he?
-Why do you think I have beer taps on the coolant spouts?

(Actually, if you see the video, that's cutting oil, which I imagine in small quantities wouldn't be toxic, but would sure clean you out some. )

-They're totally inorganic, unethically sourced, unsustainable, and literally dozens of animals were harmed in the making of this film.

Very nice. I've always enjoyed your barrels.
-I'm hoping to have this batch off to anno by Friday. (That stubby bit was just a test piece, obviously.)

The part that pisses me off, is last summer I whipped up just over 250 blanks, and gave them to a semi-local CNC shop to have bored and threaded.

That was ten goddam months ago. Last week, I called yet again, and he still hadn't started on them- basically, there's bigger money and squeakier wheels ahead of me. I said screw it, and now I'm back to producing another batch myself. I may have to use antiquated equipment 'cause I can't afford any decent CNC stuff (this is Alaska, there's zero, as in none at all, used market up here) but I'll get 'er done for you fellows.

-Yup. And, not many people know this, but those were also some of the first magfed guns, since having three hoppers (where do you think Glenn got the idea for the Grinder? ) on top of the turret was deemed too big a target for the big Japanese 18" markers.

What would you ladies and gents like to see? More machining videos? Paintball stuff? Paintball machining?

I'm not going to get into paintball product reviews or anything, there's plenty of guys out there doing that sort of thing. I'm probably not going to do general machining- like turning threads or whatever- because again, there's two dozen channels out there covering the same thing. So what's that leave?

I have no plans to ty and become any sort of "big YouTube star"- I simply don't have the time. You guys can have products and mods, or you can have videos, but not both. And right now, the products pay better than the videos- that is, the products pay something, I don't get jack from the videos, and likely never will.

But, I kind of figure I'll do videos like This Old Tony- nothing terribly specific, basically just whatever happens to be video-worthy that crosses my bench, and I want to try and make them entertaining.

Im curious about your cutting fluid pump assembly, that thing laid some oil. You gut a parts washer or something?

might as well go big on the ask, how about a vid series showing the birth of a fastback cocker body, start to finish? Then once the Video is done , you sell it to one of us here?
